One these cities were Athens. Ancient writers in Athens believed slavery to be natural and necessary. The majority of their citizens owned one or more slaves. They were given levels/jobs. These positions consisted of policemen and tutors as the highest ranking slave, herds who gather people to the assembly were next and domestic slaves and one who worked in the mines at the bottom. In Athens, domestic slaves were looked upon like one of the family and usually treated quite well. Athens received criticism because it was to distinguish a slave from a citizen. China is known for its overcrowding and harsh living conditions. For a developing country, China has a large slave system till this day. Although slavery is illegal it does not stop most of the slave owners in China. Ancient China was not much different. In Ancient China you were either born into slavery or sold to pay a debt. Most Slaves were children who did the same stuff and wore similar clothes as farmers. Some slaves built roads and others worked in government. Although they did or dress or act differently they were treated horribly. They were literally the property of their masters and had to do whatever they said. There were harsh punishments for disobeying. If for any reason their owners died they were killed so they can serve them in the afterlife. Although later dynasties tried to discourage slavery and some made it illegal it did not stop people from having them. Much like today slavery was widely practiced even if it was against the law.
