1. Should organizations be concerned about their employees being sleep-deprived? What factors influencing sleep might be more or less under the control of an organization?

Sleep plays a crucial role in our physical strength and health. It is important for life, but we frequently intentionally or unintentionally deprive ourselves to get enough of it. In fact, we receive medical care for a sickness or injury but fail to achieve the cure for a sleep disorder.

An organization or company should definitely be concerned when they find out that some of their employees are being sleep deprived while working because sleep deprivation can affect the company performance in many aspects, also if the company is pressuring every employee to work excessive hours, causing the sleep deprivation, then they should definitely be concerned and take a responsibility for it. Studies in business company prove that poor sleep among the employees can increase the risk of the companies directly to lost its productivity, endangered physical or emotional health, weakened cognition, accident rates, and increase absences among their employees, also indirectly such factors as bad morale, bad social connections, and bankruptcy.

    Sleep deprivation is a factor that has also contributed to the high death total every year. While many don’t know it, sleep isn’t just mental, sleep is a factor that is also connected to our immune system. In the book Sleep Thieves, our immune system is proven to be more active while we are asleep and can be disrupted of its normal response pattern with loss of sleep (Coren 171). Also, an experiment conducted in Finland had about 10,778 adult subjects where they were followed for six years, being monitored for their health and sleep times. By the end of these six years, the scientist were able to found out that the poorer sleepers from the group was two and a half times more likely to die during that testing period (Coren 173). This is very significant due to the fact that when we are sick, we are asleep through most of the sickness because it allowed the immune system to become increasingly more active. With less sleep, it puts us at risk for disease or sickness because by losing hours of sleep would result in a decreased immunity to illnesses. In addition, a Doctor named Damien Leger was apart of the US national commision of sleep disorders. He created a report full of findings in 1988 where he obtained information of resulting incidents from sleep deprivation. For example, in Dr. Leger’s findings, there were 24,318 deaths and 2,474,430 disabilities that were caused by sleep deprivation (238). This is…

If we are careless, the machine will break down when we least expect it. The same can be said about the most complex of machines, the human body.     Everyone knows how difficult it is to wake up after getting little to no sleep. However, many people believe that once they get up and begin their day the drowsiness will wear off. This isn’t necessarily the case. The effects of a lack of sleep can have a major impact on how one functions throughout the day without them even realizing it. According to the National Sleep Foundation, teens need 8.5-9.25 hours of sleep and adults need 7-9 hours of sleep every night. However, many people, especially teens, rarely get this much sleep on a regular basis. Some people lack sleep because they don’t have time or prefer to be doing other things.
