Gant, who has been a member of the psychology department for 17 years, began studying sleep as a graduate student. Through her studies, she found a correlation between lack of sleep and accidents.
“Going without enough sleep is as much of a public and personal safety hazard as going to work drunk,” said Gant. “It can make people clumsy, stupid, unhappy.”
"Think of sleep like exercise. People exercise because it's healthy, sleep is healthy," Gant says. The average person receives about seven hours of sleep.
Sleep deprivation can cause a serious of problems. Gant discovered that
disasters like the space shuttle Challenger, the accident at Russia’s Chernobyl nuclear reactor and the Exxon Valdez oil spill all involved sleep deprivation.
Gant explained that people who go without sleep think they’re big, sophisticated, and macho. Little do they know, it’s actually harming their body and puts other people at risk.
After discovering a link between sleep deprivation and accidents, Gant studied traffic accidents in Pennsylvania. In the spring, more accidents occur due to lack of sleep.
During daylight savings, accidents increases in Pennsylvania. “There’s an 8 percent increase in accidents the day after the time change, and there’s a corresponding decrease in accidents in the fall when people gain an extra hour of sleep,” said Gant.
Sleep deprivation hurts people each and everyday. Grant explains that the clothes that you were appears to weigh a few extra pounds and are more likely to be drowsy after lunch.
“If, say, you cut back from eight to six hours, you’ll probably become depressed,” said Grant. Even after receiving five hours of sleep you could find yourself falling asleep on your drive home from work.
There’s a simple solution to getting a great amount of sleep. Grant explains that dark and quiet places are ideal. Relaxing for about an hour, by watching TV or reading a book before bed, can help you fall asleep as well.
Grant stresses to avoid alcohol and caffeine because it can effect your brain; making you more alert. Purchasing a comfortable bed and keeping fresh linen on your bed will optimize your sleeping habits.
