I will admit that occasional procrastination causes me to miss a few nights of sleep. If I delay doing my work then have to rush to finish a projects, then the following day I am usually distracted and experience a flux in energy until I am able to sleep again. After doing this a few times, I began to appreciate the importance of sleep for both my body and mind.
No doubt, without the need to rest, a lot more tasks would be accomplished. However, people would run the risk of becoming preoccupied with their jobs and lose sight of other priorities, such as having a family and developing social skills. Hagopian, Sara’s coworker in “‘Sleep, My Little Ones’”, appeared never to leave work as he had no need to sleep. Sara had a family she needed to take care of but did Hagopian? I would like to think he did not. Someone so preoccupied with work would have no opportunity to develop or care for a family. In addition, if such a person had children, then what sort of environment would they be living in if they never saw one of their parents? In today’s world, single-parent families do exist and can function very well, but these arrangements often but additional stress on the parent and the children, both mentally and physically.
