Bright, swirling colours gleamed beneath the beam of brilliant lights that hung above. Red shining plastics slipped between indigos and pale blues to build the sturdy chassis of miniature cars, trucks and lorries. Encased in clear plastic and lined across an array of long and seemingly endless shelves, the vehicles posed a formidable and imposing force, in stark contrast with the soft toys on the opposite side they faced.
Across from the vehicles laid rows of light pinks, soft browns and gentle creams which were sewn together in earnest to produce supple bodies that drooped and sagged, seeming to beckon for cuddles. Tied with ruby ribbons around their throats and with black beads that served as kind, ungrudging eyes, they were a popular choice as young girls pulled the bears from the shelves and clutched them against their chests with joy.
The smell of rubber, strong and earthy, drifted through the air as older boys plucked hard-skinned basketballs and footballs from the large, circular metal crate that housed them. The boys instantly began to test the suitability of their choices by hurling them against the floor with loud slaps and were rewarded with great heights as the balls bounced back toward them.

Reaching out towards one of the shelves, the mother plucked a toy she deemed suitable and passed it lovingly to her infant. Grasping it with chubby fingers, the baby's eyes widened with delight as he brushed his skin over the smooth plastic, his mouth agape as he drank in the bold yellow and rings of cooler blues that encased the rattle against its hard cardboard backing.
