Small Stereotypes
Height is a characteristic that is mainly control by genetics. From a simple physical trait we make judgments about a person’s personality. A person being small has many negative stereotypes. Farther more, men being small have more negative stereotypes than for a woman being small. Men that are small have to deal with the stereotypes as being less of a man, acting childish, and other negative judgments that small men are associated with that small woman are not. A male being small is considered odd and degrading compare to a woman being small. If a small woman walks many people would not even notice her height. However if a small man walks by many people will notice and have plenty of jokes to talk about. The reason for this is that the average height of a man is taller than the average height of woman. According to the Amanda Onion of ABC News, the average height of a man is 5 foot 9 inches, while the average height of a woman is 5 foot 4 inches. When a male become 40, being short may become an advantage because they may appear younger. However when a man is 21 and assumed to be 15 can be problematic. This is a problem that short woman face as well. No adult wants to be considered a child, but when a person is small, this assumption by others can last for a long time. I think there may only be one positive effect to stereotyping. If we look at a group, we can use stereotypes to categorize these groups. We can then identify if there is a problem, and help that group to overcome oppression. If we do not recognize that a certain group is being discriminated against we can not fix the problem.…

It seems only natural that athletes would see him as a “waste of height,” but the real advantages of size in today’s world are not on the basketball court. “I like being tall,” he said. “If I had to choose a height, I’d probably go with 6’4. I’d still be taller than almost everyone, but wouldn’t have to special order clothes and all that.” Finding 34x38 jeans is no simple task in most department stores. Why do tall people like being tall? Or why do shorter people wish they were taller? When little things like finding pants and reaching the top shelf are taken out of the equation, what seems to be left is an instinctual tendency to trust or respect a taller person compared to people who may be similar in every other…

Many employers judge or assume things based on the gender of a person. Other employers simply just prefer a gender over another. Even though it happens with both genders, this type of discrimination is mostly common in women. A French scientist named Gustav Le Bon said the smaller brain size of women was - closer in size to gorillas" and tied it to women's, "fickleness, inconstancy, absence of thought and logic, and incapacity to reason"…

There were times when people showed me love because I was thinner. Just like there were times when people showed me love because I was FAT. In the world that we live in today, prejudice and stereotyping has a great impact on our perspectives of others. Every day, people are criticized and judged on their appearance based their body weight, their height and the way we look. I myself have also experienced judgement due to my physical appearance. To start, I am taller than most people my age, and it causes people to view me as powerful, athletic and intimidating. Also my thin frame evokes prejudice and leads others to underestimate my abilities; they assume that I am weak. Lastly, people have different first impressions of me based on my tattoo and the way I dress. These physical traits provoke both positive and negative criticism. Ultimately, people do not judge me based on my behaviour and personality, but rather based on the way I present my body and my physical appearance.…

People’s physical beauty is somewhat important to how they see themselves because it affects their confidence. Sometimes when people are nicely dressed, do their hairs or makeup, they feel more confident about themselves than they do if they didn’t. In our culture we almost see a lack of physical beauty or a physical deformity as a disability that prevents you from being like other people. We allow our confidence and self-esteem influence our abilities. The more confidence a person has the less limitation they put on themselves. A person with a physical disability or deformity might feel less free or confident about themselves because how society might perceive them. For example, the first time Lucy is wearing her mask when she is celebrating Halloween she says, “I felt such freedom: I waltzed up to people effortlessly and boldly.” When she wore the mask for the first time she realized how self-conscious she was about her appearance and how that affected her confidence. Some people would probably feel the same way Lucy did if they had faced what Lucy had through her life. Although she was a brave and strong person for fighting her disease, the thing that affected her confidence the most was her looks.…

Before the Agricultural Revolution, larger bodies were seen as more beautiful and normative because food sources were always limited. This then shifted as food became more available to everyone and the standard of beauty shifted to smaller, more petite bodies. These notions that smaller bodies are more superior or more deserving of respect is extremely sizeist though. Body size in relation to race has always been a huge problem, mostly lying between white and nonwhite women. The standard of beauty is seen as small, petite, and fair skin, which is highly noticeable when looking at today’s fashion marketing. One does not typically see black, curvy bodies in high fashion. Not only is there an ideal for small women, but so too for curvy…
