The colours represented at the begin of this fairy tale, white, red, and black, shows that the tale of snow white is a story line that shows her maturing throughout. White represents innocence, or birth, Red represents life and passion, and Black represents death. The story of Snow White begins when Snow is a young girl in the original version, and a young naïve woman in the Disney version, which would represent the white phase throughout the fairy tale. She begins maturing throughout the tale, which would represent the red stage, then falls into death in her sleep-like state, which represents the black phase.
In Grimm’s version, the story tells us that snow whites mother picked her finger, and that three drops of blood fell to the snow. This is when she wished ethat she would have a child who was “white as snow, as red as blood, and as black as the wood of the ebony embroidery frame!” At the beginning we where told that the number three represents menstruation. Not very long after that the Queen had a child with skin as white as snow, lips as red as blood and hair as black as ebony. Sadly, after giving birth to Snow White, the Queen died. However, the role of the evil stepmother was introduced shortly. An evil step mom/ the lack of a mother at all are very common in fairy tales, because if a mother was present the series of unfortunate events would not take place.
