Soccer College Essay
With my hands trembling, sweat dripping endlessly from my body, and nerves attacking my stature, I stood on the goal line in the center of the goal staring at the girl standing twelve yards in front of me. The sound of complete silence forced itself into my head along with thousands of thoughts doubting my ability to block her shot. As the goalkeeper for my soccer team, the time came for me to shine.

It was the championship game of our tournament and we had excelled to the top winning each game before hand. But none of that mattered anymore, we had to win the championships or else our long practices and hard work wouldn’t count for much. My team was ahead throughout the whole game up until the last few minutes of the game. A defender on my team violently tripped an opponent inside our penalty box, resulting in the referee to blow his whistle and call for a PK (penalty kick). A PK is a free shot for the fouled team twelve yards in front of the goal with only the goalkeeper standing between the ball and the net. It is also the shooters greatest dream but the goalkeeper’s worst nightmare.

The two of us caught eyes and stared at one another for what seemed like a lifetime when it reality it lasted for only a few seconds. My opponent arranged the ball on the spot then slowly backed up keeping her eyes locked into mine. I broke the connection by looking at the ground and closing my eyes to visualize myself blocking the shot. I looked up and inside I knew that I was ready for what was coming toward me. The referee blew the whistle and my opponent was about to take her shot.

I saw the ball fly off her foot and head towards my right side. I lunged to the right; not expecting anything but to hear the sound of ball hit the net. But then to my surprise, I felt the ball strike my hands and I watched it soar out of bounds slightly to the right of the goal. I was in complete and utter amazement at what I had just done. I was so in tuned with my save and the feeling of

She places her hands on her knees and bends over in order to catch her breath. She looks out at the goal and the goalkeeper, then takes a quick glance at her teammates– her eyes scanning the stadium as she does. The vivid colors of the American and Chinese flags stand out no matter where she looks. The sound of silence engulfs her, and she can feel the audience’s eyes drilling holes into her. She takes her hands off her knees, stands up and looks down at the ball. The Chinese goalkeeper keeps her eyes focused on her opponent and the ball, making sure she does not look away for even a second. She takes a deep breath, and is overwhelmed by the smell of dirt and sweat. She looks down at the ball and then the goalie.…

"Time out!" Yell the coach of the opposing team. Running to the bench, we sit and try to listen to see how we will play the last 45 seconds. We are so close to each other that you can practically hear the heart beats thundering in the other girls' hearts. Coach's lips are moving and there is a small breeze from his hand moving so fast telling us where we have to position. All anyone is thinking is that we need to score.…

It was a really hot day. The scorching sun in the sky made it almost impossible to play. When we all got out the truck, we went to the field that we were supposed to play on. There was a game on the field. This meant that we got here early. Of course, most people would use that extra time to warm up. But for me, it was completely different. I sat on the bleachers. I was thinking deeply on my moves in order to bypass the defense. BEEP!!!!! The referee has blown the whistle to end the current game. The whistle snapped me out of what I was thinking. It was our turn to…

Now the momentum was completely in my teams direction. We went on a 5 to 2 point run and with 1 minute left we had our first lead of the game by 1 point. The last minute was agonizing, because we didn’t even possess the ball for one minute. The opposing team kept shooting and shooting but none of their shoots would go in the hoop. Finally, in the final second of the game Kyle Coats drives hard to the hoop and misses. I gave the ref an ear full when she called a foul and gave him two foul shoots. Of course, he makes the first free throw with ease but the second one took a lucky bounce outside hope. Meaning that the game was going to overtime. Overtime was one 5 minute period winner takes all. I honestly couldn’t believe the even had overtime in intramural basketball. We drew first blood in overtime when Mike Tangredi made an easy lay up. Towards the end opposing player John Lane hit a long 2 pointer tying the game up. With a little bit more then a minute to go my teammate Joey Morath found me again in the corner for yet another 3 pointer. Unfortunately for the other team, they missed all there 3 pointers to tie the game and we took the win in…

We were playing Montgomry Bell Academy, MBA we called them. The first quarter wasn’t anything to speak about. By the beginning of the second quarter, the score was one nothing and we weren’t the ones winning. Anyone who has ever played lacrosse knows that even a one-point lead is a lot in this sport. It was the beginning of the second quarter and I was starting with a face-off. I crouched down in front of the other player, sweat dripping off his maroon jersey, our sticks were on the ground in front of us, with the ball between us, beckoning me to scrape it away. I was nervous because the other guy was bigger than me but I was excited to start playing. The ref yelling SET and blowing his whistle brought me out of my head and into the game. I stood straight up and pushed the other guy out of the way and tried to kick the ball away from him but he knocked me down. I…

But this did not comfort me as I knew that I did have the potential to do better. My coach emphasized on the fact that controlling the ball was an essential skill of a “complete football player” and that I was failing to master it. I was disheartened and dismayed by my performance. But over the next few days I viewed my debacle from a different point of view and I began to…

“Katelyn you're up!” I heard my lanky redheaded coach Kevin screech. I slid on my batting gloves that were caked in dirt, and tightened my helmet that was meant for a 8 year old. I felt a tingling sensation rush through my body, I knew that I was going to do something great. It was the top of the 4th and we were down by two, already down a player so our outfield had to work vigorously to make sure not even a sickly hit could get past them. I could see Kenzie, a short stocky girl, with a bright pink helmet get ready to sprint to 2nd. As I got up to bat I felt the tingling sensation continue to grow, scared out of my mind that I would strike out and end the inning, I stepped up to bat.…

The ball fell into the hands of my teammate. First quarter flashes by. The game had been back and forth. Second quarter rolls around. There is six minutes and 12 seconds on the clock. I was standing at half court. One of the Todd County girls was taking the ball out, and we pulled our press on. She over throws the ball and it comes directly to me. All I could think was it is a fast break, so I need to push the ball up the court. I start dribbling the basketball. I could barely here the ball bouncing and out of nowhere I hear a teammate yelling my name. I look over and her girl had been screened, so she was wide open. I immediately quit dribbling and I plant my left foot in front of my right and I twist to my left to pass the ball to her. I felt something funny pinch in my knee, and I instantly fell down. The ball never reached my teammate, and it was picked up from an opposing player. I tried to get up, because I knew I had to rush down there to play defense. As I put all my weight on my right knee tears started to stream, and I realized I could not get up. The ref called a timeout, and Mr. Aaker walked out to…

One of my challenges was in my Sophomore year when I didn't make the varsity team because I was not in good condition. The other challenge happen in my junior year when I got injured a week before the championship game and I had to recover before the game. When I was a sophomore I tried out for the varsity soccer team at my school but I did not make it, because I was not at that level. Some of the reason I did not make it were ,because I was overweight, slow, not strong enough and would put too much pressure on myself so I was not able to complete a pass or a shot. Those were the things I needed to work on so I could become a better soccer player. I was really upset…

“Awesome! I was hoping you would be,” she had exclaimed, to my surprise. The echoes of this conversation circled through my head as I stood stoically in the goalcrease, refusing to show any anxiety. Clouds of breath billowed out of my mask like smoke. It was the championship game of a tournament and our team had tied the game up at the last minute. Now we were in a shootout and the pressure was on. It was the opposing team’s turn to shoot, and unfortunately, the last shot of the round. If I made the save, we would win, if I didn’t make the save..well, I tried not to think about that.…
