Personal Narrative: New Jersey State Basketball Coach
Sweat dripped of my face as the third quarter came to an end. Fatigue in my muscles made every step feel like climbing a flight of stairs. My body ached when I heard the loud horn, signifying the end of the quarter. “Hurry in. C'mon C’mon” screamed my coach hurrying to give us wisdom on what to do in our situation. We were up twelve with the final quarter the only thing keeping us—Rocky River High School— away from the title of New Jersey State Basketball Champions. Our team had been favorites to win in three out of my fours years of starting as the high school shooting guard. Our previous seasons had ended in disappointment from our captain getting injured; to losing the last year in a pitiful fashion, not making it to the playoffs. This year was the year. Our team had no injuries and the momentum of dominating opponents on our side. The coach had some words for us in the final planned stoppage of play; his words of wisdom were,
“don’t give up, take a chance, and play your hardest.” Our team walked out of the locker room,

Then the ball was passed to me. I dribbled the ball to the three point line. I hesitated with the shot.
I heard a scream from the sideline my coach told me “Shoot the DANG BALL!”
I hurried up and heaved the ball towards the basket. Time became slow motion as my heart pounded rapidly, and my stomach did somersaults. The ball soared through the air before bouncing of the backboard. The ball fell through the basket like a feather.
The entire gymnasium roared as the die-hard fans rushed onto the court to congratulates us. My fellow teammates rushed to me with sweaty hugs, as my mind took pictures of the event so this memory would be engraved in me for the rest of my life. Lastly, my family rushed in to congratulate me them being almost as happy we won as I was happy we

The year is 2005 and everything seemed normal. Eastlake won the Indiana state championship sweeping every team that stepped in front of them. That year while they went 26-0 and had the top scorer in the state, Tyrese Walker averaging 34 ppg. The Wacko lions went 4-22 the most wins that we had in 3 long seasons under Coach Knight. It was my senior season and even though being the all-time leading scorer in school history doesn’t change the fact without others contributing a team can’t win. Like the old saying goes,…

Likewise, perfection and happiness do not always come from winning or having money. The most important lesson I have learned this season was that being perfect is not about the scoreboard. It's not about winning. It's about you and your relationship with yourself, your family and your friends. Being perfect is about being able to look your friends in the eye and know that you didn’t let them down because you did everything you could – that there wasn’t one more thing you could have done, and when the going got tough, you did not put your head down and give up, but you fought on. Winning is not about who hits the hardest, but who can get hit hard and still keep moving forward. Applying that mentality to my life has made me a more successful and happy person regardless of whether or not I win, lose, triumph or fail. Life and football are very similar, both have their ups and downs, and your ability to keep a level head and never get too high or too low is what makes you a winner. The experience of my last year of high school football was the culmination of all the lessons I have learned through out my life, on and off the…

After finishing my breakfast the game started and I was a starting point guard and i was also the jumper. I tipped the ball to my team we started with it. By the end of the first quarter we were up 12-0 with all points scored by me. In the second quarter we started with the ball and immediately scored on the other team. After scoring the immediate basket we all knew this quarter was going to be like the first one, a total blow out. We ended the second quarter 21-0 still with all points scored by me.…

Down in the locker room, one of my favorite coaches looked at my team and stated, “I’m sorry. I will not be returning next year to be your coach.” I sat there almost in tears, because at that moment my love for basketball almost left with him. Billy Martin was a favorite coach of mine. He loved each of us like one of his own, and treated all of us the same. He wanted each of us to succeed and would do anything to help us reach that. Coach Martin instilled in me no matter how talented a person was, you could always beat them by working hard. I could not believe he would not be my head coach next year, but he did soften the blow by saying he would still be around until we were use to our new head coach. We were all very upset about his department…

The best part of my freshman basketball team was traveling to different location with my team. While we travel on the road, we would often sing, and dance on the bus. Coach Belford would often go over plays with the team before the games on the bus. We would look out the bus windows to look at the new environment. Me and a couple of my teammates would stretch on the bus before the games. My favorite thing to do on the bus, was to listen to music. Listening to music always hype me up before the game. It was like pregame ritual for every game I played. Sometimes we would go out to eat after the games as a team. When we win most of the time we would sing are school anthem. Think about it now my freshmen basketball road trip were the best trip I had during my high school…

The thrill of the ball rolling off my fingers, my cleats digging in the ground, and the next sound I heard was, “Strike 3, you’re out!” As I walked back to the dugout, and my teammates high-fiving each other, our coach, said we needed to score 2 more runs to win the game, 10 minutes later, we were celebrating, that we won the last game of the season.…

The end of her junior year, she takes center stage inside of Pinnacle Bank Arena with a large dose of adrenaline as she takes the court for one of the biggest games in the state tournament. First round of the tournament they play the number one team in class A. Her former summer teammate, now known as the 2015-2016 Big Ten women's basketball player of the year takes the court against her. They both fight to stay on top to continue on to the semifinals. My sister Marisa fought until the last minute in the game after losing earlier in the season to the undefeated Fremont tigers. She beat the number one team in the state. As the final buzzer sounded, the Millard West fans went crazy. I saw tears running down faces and parents hugging all around. The players went crazy jumping on…

We took the photo, but there were so many people waiting for the speech, we were forced to the court. It was time for coach’s speech, and said, “ Great game guys it was up to the final stretch and thank you for all our parents who take time out of their lives to let their child commit in this activity.” I honestly didn’t pay attention to his speech this time until he called me up to talk to everyone. Actually coach did all the talking and I just stood and smiled. Coach said “the only reason we won this game is because of JC. It was a team effort but he showed he wanted it the most and proved if you believe you can do something, no one can stop you from achieving your goal.” Once he was through his speech, he dismissed our team. Even though I was a punching bag earlier today, I felt great that I was the star of the…
