The Differences Between Soccer and Football

Football, for many, is a topic of entertainment. In many parts of the world soccer’s official name is football, but with the evolution of American football, the name was changed to soccer. It is thought that American football originated by a soccer player, who was frustrated by kicking the ball. He decided to change the rules of the game by using his hands, and thus, American football was born. Some of the major differences in soccer and football are the equipment players use, techniques for the game, and timing of each game. Even though soccer and football teams are composed of twenty two players, with eleven players on each team, and use a similar field in length and width, the equipment used differs. Soccer players use the traditional round leather ball, which is usually black and white. Gear includes a pair of cleats and shin guards, which extend from the knees to the ankles, to protect the shins, which are the most vulnerable in the game. In football, the ball used is brown and oval-shaped, which makes the ball easier to advance through the air; it is characterized by a series of stitches on each side. The helmet is the most important to protect against high impacts to the head and is used in conjunction with a mouth piece and jaw pads. Rib,

On the other hand, American football was played mainly in American and has not spread like soccer. However, it is played in other parts in the name of rugby whereby slight differences have been introduced. Soccer employs strict no hand rule in the field and only uses this during the throwing of the ball after it gets out of the field or by the goalkeeper. Strict measures are taken if one of the players touches the ball with his or her hands when the game is being played. In American football, players use hands and feet when playing.…

In Soccer, the players have to wear uniforms which consist of shorts, shirts, socks, and cleats. For protection players only have shin guards to use and the goalkeeper has padded gloves to avoid injuries. There is additional equipment needed for this sport like flags and cones. Unlike American Football, the players have to wear much more gear than Soccer. The players also have to use a uniform. Therefore, football players are required to use football cleats, tight pants, and a jersey that states the player’s name, number, and team identity. Each jersey number categories the position of the player. The jersey needs to be larger in size so it can accommodate the shoulder pads that players use as protection for their upper body. There are other padding that protects the elbows, thighs, hip, tail, and knees. Even the head helmets and face mask which is secured to the head with a chin strap, that offers some head protection have some padding to prevent a concoction. Both sports require a use of a ball; however, the shape differs greatly. The round shaped ball is use in soccer and the oval shaped ball in football. Each ball has significance while playing game. The oval shaped thickness of the ball helps players get a better grip while tossing it to another to score a point. As opposed to, the round ball is kicked around from one player to another to make a…

Football, as well as rugby and soccer, is believed to have originated from an ancient Greek game known as Harpaston. Harpaston is mentioned quite frequently throughout classical literature, in which it is referred to as a “very rough and brutal” game. The rules of this ancient sport were simple: a team would be awarded points when a player would move the ball across the opposing team’s goal line by either kicking the ball, running with it across the goal line, or throwing it across the line to another player. The only objective of the other team was to stop the ball from crossing their line, by whatever means possible. There was no specific field length, no side line boundaries, no specified number of…

There are many female soccer players in high school who wear protective headgear and have a sense of confidence that the headgear will protect them from getting any concussions. “Natasha Helmick spent six years playing soccer wearing a headband, believing the headgear would prolong her soccer career by preventing concussions. Helmick, 20, said that the headgear inflated her belief that she was safer on the field and she began to play more aggressively” (Snow). Wearing headgear in soccer will easily boost any girls’ confidence and make them play harder, it will also make the parents feel more comfortable about their daughter going head to head on the soccer field. The only problem with this is players are still at risk come into injuries like concussions. “For Helmick, the head guard gave her family confidence that she was being better protected from head injuries, but she suffered at least five concussions while wearing the headband” (Snow). Helmick is now sidelined from soccer for good. There are many young women who are in high school that suffer such severe cases of concussions and they can no longer play the game they love. Some of these young women have had up to five concussions and are only between the ages fifteen through seventeen. The concussions these young women in high school suffer are so severe they are only allowed to attend school for four hours a day and have to eat in candlelight to ease their headaches. “The number of girls suffering concussions in soccer accounts for the second largest amount of all concussions reported by young athletes” (Snow). From my experience with playing soccer for fifteen years, heading is a very important part of the game. Heading is an important part of the game because it can be a matter of scoring a winning goal or even to tie the game. When I played soccer growing up I was unaware of the risks of concussions because the girls I…

Although they have some similarities there are also quite a few differences. First of all American football is played with an egg-shaped ball while soccer is played with a sphere shaped ball. Football players are usually large and strong due to the contact of the sport which requires them to wear padding to protect themselves, including shoulder pads, helmets, and padded pants. Soccer players are usually quite a bit smaller, a heck of a lot faster, and have to be very well conditioned. They only have shin guards as padding. Another major difference is scoring. In American football six points are awarded for a touchdown and one point for an extra point which occurs when a ball is kicked through the uprights after a touchdown. Three points are awarded for a field goal which is kicking the ball through the uprights. Also two points for a safety which occurs when an opposing player is tackled in his own end zone. Soccer scoring is only 1 point and it’s simply called a goal. The game…

The world of football in the world’s eyes is quickly changing. Instead of many people thinking of this sport as one of the world’s most beloved sources of entertainment, this characterization has become incorrect in many ways because of both conflicts and interconnections with injuries. It’s difficult to decipher the actual cause of the injuries. However, there are still clear distinctions of the evolution of football equipment, and the immediate effects of the lack of protection which it had. Although the advancement of football equipment has drastically increased, the injury toll has as well. In the 1900’s body trauma wasn’t an overwhelming issue. Theodore Roosevelt advanced the game of football. His influence gave the protection of leather equipment, and player very scarcely got hurt. On the other hand, injuries in the twentieth century are constantly occurring. Many researchers say that this continuation is due to wanting positive physical appearance such as capacity, the advancements in helmets, and the advancements in shoulder pads. All in which came into play from the persuasion of President Theodore Roosevelt.…
