Social Anxiety In College Students
Anxiety can be described as the nervousness or unease associated with an unavoidable event for which the outcome is uncertain. The presence of social anxiety in college students has been studied many times in relation to alcohol consumption. There are mixed results in the link between social anxiety and drinking. Villarosa, Moorer, Madson, Noble, and Zeigler-Hill (2014) did not find a direct relationship between social anxiety and alcohol consumption, but found a positive relationship between social anxiety and negative consequences due to alcohol (ie.neglecting responsibilities or missing a day’s worth of class work.)
Amount of alcohol that is consumed in one setting has also been listed as a factor when exploring social anxiety and drinking.
