A person with social anxiety disorder is afraid that they will make mistakes, look bad, and be embarrassed or humiliated in front of others. With this fear, they might not go around social situations at all. Without treatment, social anxiety disorder can negatively interfere with the person's normal daily routine. (MayoClinic,2013)…
My discussion post is based on Social Anxiety Documentary: Afraid of People. I have always thought of social anxiety disorder as just extreme shyness, but until I heard the stories in this video, I never realized how extreme the shyness was. The case that stood out to me the most was probably the young girl Kayla. It cannot imagine suffering like that everyday at school. I have always thought of myself as very introverted and quiet, but I have overcome my struggles when it came to speaking and presenting.…

With awareness of different mental and psychologically disorders on the rise, one in particular caught my eye. Social anxiety disorder has always intrigued me due to its close relationship to shyness and has sparked many different questions pertaining to how this disorder differs from just being shy. For my research paper, I would like to explore how this disorder’s symptoms are different from being shy as well as explore why people with social anxiety exhibit these symptoms. In exploring why people exhibit symptoms, I hope to find different studies that show how social anxiety disorder affects the brain and how people with the disorder’s brains differ from people who do not suffer from it. Along with this, I would also like to be able to thoroughly explain how the disorder affects the daily lives of sufferers and when symptoms of the disorder begin as well as how to recognize that these symptoms correlate to having social anxiety disorder. For my research paper, I would like to explain different treatments for the disorder and figure their effectiveness as well as why they are effective. I will also examining the correlation between social anxiety and many other different mental or psychological disorders and determining if there is a direct relationship between any two.…
There is not an exact cause of Agoraphobia. Panic may become a learned behavior. Agoraphobia sometimes occurs when a person has had a panic attack and begins to fear situations that might lead to another panic attack (Taylor CT, 2012). Agoraphobia also tends to run in families and sometimes has a…
It was finally beginning to feel like fall in New York. The weather was mild, the breeze was gentle, and the air smelt of trees and of course the obvious aroma of pollution and cars. Christian was just calmly wondering around the campus of New York University, headphones in, trying to ignore those around him. Being around a lot of people isn't really his thing. Dealing with social anxiety isn't always best for someone who lives in the New York City area, but he tries his best to be comfortable around others.…
For many years, I struggled with social anxiety and a fear of what others were thinking, as I’ve moved through high school, I’ve been able to move past this anxiety and engage with the community more easily. Early on my anxiety hurt my move into high school, I went from kindergarten through eighth grade in a school of around 120 students to high school, of about 10 times more. The main issues my anxiety concerned were involvement in class, and expressing my opinion, much of it out of a fear of being wrong. By getting thrown into this much larger school, I adapted much quicker than I might have if I had gone somewhere more nurturing, I quickly shifted how I acted when dealing with other people and in class. I’ve been able to express my opinion…

Ever since I was a young child I have struggled with social anxiety. When I would be around people I didn’t know in social settings, I would show common signs of anxiety like feelings of panic, shakiness, and nausea. Once I entered freshman year of high school, I knew I would have to be able to control this anxiety while starting over and making new friends. The thought of socializing with people I did not know terrified me. One day I found out that a girl in my class loved Taylor Swift. At the time I was obsessed with anything Taylor Swift related so I took the plunge and I sat with her at lunch one day and we talked nonstop about how much we both loved Taylor Swift. Since I faced my anxiety head on by talking to this girl, we have been best…
From the outside looking in, people might believe I have an easy life. They may see me as someone who never struggles to achieve anything in life. Whether it is good grades or high test scores, others think they are easy for me to obtain. However, I am human just like everyone else. What they don’t know is I struggle with social anxiety. To some, shyness is just another personality trait, but for me, it can sometimes be debilitating. As an introverted person, I find it difficult to interact with other people for prolonged periods of time. This includes socializing, maintaining friendships, sharing my ideas and opinions, and speaking to large groups of people. Social anxiety often prevents me from participating in activities in which I have…
In one particular situation that I was in a few years ago, I used all three strategies to successfully lower my uncertainty. This occurred when I began to work at my first job, which was at a family owned restaurant. Like all things that are uncommon and new to anyone, there is a sense of uncertainty and anxiety that many people feel, and in this situation I was definitely experiencing this. After a few weeks of working there, I had developed a few relationships with my co-workers, but I had yet to know who worked there that was related to the owner. Not knowing if I was working in front of someone related to the family was very nerve wrecking to me. It was this problem that caused me to worry about incorrectly doing my job, and…
