Anxiety In The Workplace
In one particular situation that I was in a few years ago, I used all three strategies to successfully lower my uncertainty. This occurred when I began to work at my first job, which was at a family owned restaurant. Like all things that are uncommon and new to anyone, there is a sense of uncertainty and anxiety that many people feel, and in this situation I was definitely experiencing this. After a few weeks of working there, I had developed a few relationships with my co-workers, but I had yet to know who worked there that was related to the owner. Not knowing if I was working in front of someone related to the family was very nerve wrecking to me. It was this problem that caused me to worry about incorrectly doing my job, and …show more content…
Although at this point I was well aware of many of the details about my co-workers, I only knew about those related to the family from other sources, and not from them their selves. Despite the fact that knowing this information did not have a critical impact on me, I decided to form relationships with these people in an attempt to obtain the information anyway. In the initial stage of meeting one another, I was slightly nervous, but the first two strategies caused a majority of that to go away. As our relationships began to form and strengthen, it occurred to me that this issue I was attempting to solve was not nearly as big of a deal as I thought it out to be. With that being said, directly approaching these family members of the owner did cause our relationships with one another to grow, and my uncertainty decreased completely. My doubt and insecurity had vanished, and it was due to the use of all three strategies. The second strategy was definitely the most useful, but without the first and third strategies to begin my decrease in uncertainty and end it completely, I likely would not have done so in as short as time as I did. I feel that nearly all situations that have a sense of anxiety will benefit from not just one strategy, but all of them, and I think my situation is a great example of

The article Our Anxious Culture: Triggers for Anxiety by Richard Restak, discusses how anxiety affects our culture in the sense of how we choose and perceive many things around us. I found many of the topics Restak brings up very interesting and although when reading this the topics seem obvious, such as a hindsight bias, I did not think about them before reading the article. One of the topics I found interesting and seemed to correlate with all other topics brought up was the media and what they choose to talk about and how they choose to talk about it. Millions of people suffer from social anxiety and I am one of them. It affects me daily in all social situations. This anxiety constantly makes me fear of what others think of me and fearful of embarrassing situations. Unfortunately, I think of how a situation can go wrong before it even happens. However, to deal with this I put myself into situations I fear. Instead of pondering how each thing can go wrong, I jump right in. For example, I attended the transfer meeting by myself, which may not seem like an accomplishment but it was for me. Quietly, I walked into an unknown social situation with thoughts of, what if I go into the wrong room, what if there are no available seats and what if I have to speak aloud. Nevertheless, I walked through…
