The novel "Things Fall Apart" shows an amazing amount of information of how things fall apart for the for the Ibo people as a result of colonialism. In the book the British built a church to practice not only their religion but proved a station to push the Ibo to convert religions. This action begins in the realm of religion. If the Ibo begin to attend the church to practice Christianity instead of following their traditional beliefs, many parts of their culture changes. A different philosophy of what is right from wrong starts to form. Another change in the book caused by the British was the fact that they built a school where Ibo children can learn to read and write. This change begins in the realm of culture. Is the Ibo begin to read and write in the European language instead of traditional language, many parts of their philosophy changes. A different social structure will create a point of inequality. Which can eventually make other problems in other realms such as the political realm. Having inequality can allow people to be taken advantage of. For example, in the book the British had trick the Ibo elders to being captured and asked for a bounty upon the return of the council, But because there was a language barrier between the commissioner and the Ibo people. The handlers had to translate because they felt the Ibo people to be inferior they raised the bounty the Commissioner asked for and
took the extra for themselves. This shows the realm of politics changing for the Ibo now they have to answer to the British Commissioner for their wrongdoing. Forcing them to take on the corrupt British government. All these changes the British pushed onto the Ibo starts to completely changing their society piece by piece. A major change colonialism brought to colonize parts of the world is religion. A change in religion in any culture is a change in the foundation of a whole society, religion is a part of everything. In two photos by Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture each each photos features a different woman. The first picture shows a woman from Senegalese not changed at all by the colonization still wearing her local clothing. In the second picture it shows a different Senegalese woman who has been affected by colonization and has converted to Christianity. In doing so she has adopted the Christian clothing, changing the way she dresses. These are two good examples of how a change in religion can have major effects on culture. The African changing their Forces them to forget where they have come from and their peoples traditions and customs. This change does not only affect their culture it also affects the social realm because with new clothes people can be singled out to be converts. This can
cause inequality in a society allowing people to sometimes be viewed as inferior or traitors to a culture. For example in the novel “Things Fall Apart” Okonkwo views his son to be a girl because he has joined the white man and has converted abandoning his culture and people. In doing that his father and the local people all have hatred for him and exile him. Colonialism is both good thing for society but also a bad thing. The good part of colonialism is the fact that it help advance society allowing new innovation to help people. The bad part of colonialism is that it is a cruel way to trick people into abandoning there local culture and teaching for something that is sort of purposely brought to them to change them. I find it unfair and wrong.

As seen by many historians, the era of good feelings was an era of nationalism and progress, to a certain degree. However, the addition of sectionalist ideas shattered the nationalistic views. Many social developments arose in the Americas, Western Europe and Africa during this time. The Americas experienced a huge change when they were invaded by Europe. Natives were forced into labor, killed and a new social order was created with Europeans on top and natives/Africans on the bottom. The native Americans received (or had forced upon them) Christianity, which also created education for them. When the Americas were first invaded, the conquistadors also brought new technology and ideas, along with diseases like smallpox, which played a huge part in their downfall. Africa also experienced social developments, though many were negative. Enslavement occurred, which resulted in families being torn apart. Leaders of tribes sold out their own (and other people) for weapons and money. This is a large part of why Africa is a third world country today. Like the Americas, Africa received diseases from Europeans. One of the only positive outcomes of this was the small advancement in technology and their being exposed to outside cultures. Western Europe, a huge collection of powerful nations in that time frame, resulted in an abundance of positive outcomes from their connections with the Atlantic world. Prices for many products went down due to crops and labor in the Americas. Textiles were built which lowered the price of cloth and created jobs. All of these developments led to the industrialization of Europe (and other countries later). An extremely influential occurrence that happened in the given time frame was the religious…

What can we, civilized, technologically advanced people possibly have in common with the uncivilized Ibo people? In the story “Things Fall Apart” an Ibo village is disturbed by Westerners that try to change the Ibo people’s entire outlook on life. I really enjoyed this book because it reminded me that if you believe in something then you have to do everything to defend it. This story teaches us that no matter how sable something may seem, someone can come and ruin everything. The Ibo people’s culture is very interesting and very different from Western culture, but like any other cultures they also have their little similarities.…

In nineteenth century America, social reform movements sought to change the social and political views of marginalized groups of people, those who were thought of as insignificant in the eyes of society (“Definition of Social Reform”). Reform movements, predominantly make subtle changes to particular characteristics of society to improve the quality of the situation that many marginalized groups are in. According to the article, “Fund for Southern Communities, What is social change(FSC),” Social change is “the structural transformation of political, social and economic systems and, institutions to create a more equitable and just society.” In other words through cooperation, and organization of the people changes can occur for their benefit. These organizations form when a group of people are dissatisfied with the actions of the government or something that occurred in their community. As agitation and organization builds the people form groups with the fixed mentality of causing the change that they desire. Social change can come about in one of two ways. The first way is from the top down, where the government proposes a change that has to occur for example; President Obama is attempting to have passed into law that to have a job anywhere, a person needs at least two years of college. The social can also occur from bottom to top, where the people rally together and get their senators and community leaders involved in making a change. For example, Ms. Black was named Chancellor of New York City schools by Mayor Bloomberg. Parents worked with their senators and councilmen to have her removed because she lacked the qualifications necessary for the job.…

“Things fall apart, the center cannot hold. Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world” (Achebe). In his postcolonial tragedy, Things Fall Apart, Chinua Achebe writes about the collapse of the Ibo African tribal system due to the arrival of aggressive European missionaries. Achebe focuses on “both what was strong and what was weak in the African past” (Appiah). He traces back the roots of his people to the “moment when [they] lost [their] initiative to other people, to colonizers” (Appiah). Throughout his novel Achebe shows the effects the Ibo culture experiences when Christian colonizers arrive.…
