The Changes of Chicago Today, there are many large and prodigious cities located in the United States. The city of Chicago, also known as the windy city, is one of the bigger cities in the states.. In the years 1857-1874, The city of Chicago developed in its transportation, construction of buildings, and in methods of transportation. Within the map of 1857, Chicago was beginning to show signs of growth in the population and also in the methods of transportation. At the time, transportation was still developing and was at its earliest stages. For example, horse carriages were still present at the time and were still the primary way to travel. Since the Chicago River ran through most of the city, Boats and ships were also another
crucial and important way to travel from place to place. Transportation played a big role during this time period of Chicago, but there was not too many places for someone to travel to. According to the map, there was a lot of empty space still visible. Not too many buildings or other sights were present due to various reasons. One huge reason for it is the lifestyle of the people at the time. The resident of Chicago would live their lives farming and raising animals; therefore the empty land was a necessity for the people. Growing crops was also another reason for the empty land throughout Chicago. They were very common way to sustain a normal life at the time. Population was also not at its highest point yet; infact, it was really below average at the time. Reasons being is that Chicago was still a growing city and it had just begun to bring in residents.
