Social Diversity: A Country of Free Expression
Today’s American society is structured through layers of various personalities and “ Personal Self’s” as categorized by Walker Percy. U.S culture is among the most diverse cultures in the world ranging through different categories, based on Walker Percy’s A Short Quiz, the most common are the Standard American High-school-Republican-and-Democratic self, the Christian Self, and the Role-taking self due freedom of self expression and the pursuit of self happiness. Although there are a variety of different self’s in this nation, these 3 are prominent in society.
The Standard American High-school-Republican-and-Democratic self is found in American culture through military personal, athletes, and music artists whom are icons among the American people. Military personnel are considered heroes in American society due their tough lifestyle and willingness to do what most people wouldn’t be able to do; which is to be something greater than thy self. Most leave their respective branch with a sense of pride and accomplishment; therefore expect society to respect their accomplishments during their enlistment. War veterans in this country are viewed, as incredible individuals furthermore are some of the most respected individuals in the country due to their actions in the time of war. Music artists in general can be considered the Standard American Jeffersonian self through their success and advancement in social status. Most artists for example, hip hop mogul Jay-z, built their empire instead of being handed success. Jay-z accomplished the “ American Dream” by becoming an icon among his peers and the American people. His determination for success and endeavors made him who he is today which has earned him the respect of the people.
