Social Influences Paper

1. Examine basic concepts of human interaction from a psychology perspective. In your examination, describe at least two examples of how human behavior changes based on social situations. In your description be sure to address the following:

a. Describe the specific behaviors. You have chosen two human behaviors: (a) people drinking alcohol to express their feelings or (b) only smoking marijuana at parties because they can 't have fun there without it. b. Describe the context in which the behaviors occurred. The context might be a party or a bar or every day use

alcoholic. Similarly, the marijuana user might be a recreational user to have fun when she or he goes out for entertainment, such as on the weekends, or a daily user, which the latter would mean that the person is addicted and would probably require professional intervention to stop using.

c. Analyze precursors and consequences of the behaviors in terms of social psychology concepts. Most social psychological concepts focus on the person and the situation. A few specific examples include self-esteem, self-concept, and social comparison that might apply to people who use alcohol and drugs as a coping mechanism e.g., express example or to have fun. Self esteem is essentially what one person feels about him or her. This would include attitudes about their abilities, their emotions, their social status, and so on. The social psychological theory I chose was sociocultural perspective. I learned this early on in High School. I noticed higher status being given to the guys who had cars to drive. So, early on I was motivated to get a job so I could buy a car. And the guys with the cooler cars were even more popular. There are many examples I could use to demonstrate this type of phenomenon in High School, but I believe this to be one of the most basic examples. One could easily argue this to be more of a socioeconomic status symbol but that would be getting ahead of ourselves. Personally, I find perspective to be one of the most important tools in psychology. The best…

George Bush’s book, Decision Points, is a memoir of his experiences and decisions he made throughout his presidency. Bush chooses to highlight the most challenging and controversial issues in his presidency, and tries to shed some light on the events. Bush lays out two goals he wanted to accomplish in the book; the first being that he wants to “paint a picture of what it was like to serve as president for eight consequential years.” Secondly, he wants to “give readers a perspective on decision making in a complex environment.” He hopes that one day, Decision Points will be used as a historical resource for this time period, but for now, he hopes that it will help to clarify some questions or clear up controversy left in the wake of his presidency.…

Darley and Latane determined that for obvious reasons they would not be able to reproduce the events of the Genovese murder but needed a situation that would approximate a true emergency in order for the bystanders to be observed. Darley and Latene told students taking an introductory psychology class at New York University a covers story stating, that they were conducting a study on how students adjust to university life in a competitive, urban environment and the types of personal problems they were experiencing. They told the students they would be in separate rooms to avoid any discomfort. The students were then asked to take turns talking to one…

Drug addiction is a disease with serious consequences. The causes of drug addiction can be complex. Risk factors include family disposition, neighborhood, and social acquaintances. The intended results are the ultimate high, euphoria, and numbness drugs can provide. It is widely known, however, that these results are only temporary solutions to real world problems. The long term psychological impacts of the stress and strain that drug abuse causes on the brain can be debilitating. However, the physical effects are not the only repercussion of drug addiction. While there are people that have the ability to use prescription and recreational drugs no harmful effects, some individuals can become addicted to a certain drug after using it just one time and the social effects can be just as…

Researchers have recognized personal enjoyment, social pressure, and tension reduction as major domains of drinking motives, which are related to different aspects of alcohol use (Kuntsche et al., 2005). Personal enjoyment motive was more strongly coupled with heavy drinking, while social motives such as peer behavior and workplace dynam¬ics were identified to be related with lighter drinking patterns predominantly among young alcohol users (Aharonovich et al., 2008). Also, tension reduction motives were found to be associated to solitary drinking (Aharonovich et al., 2008).…

Throughout my teenage years, I’ve known many peers that involve themselves in mind-altering activities on the weekends. Whether it is at parties, social events or just hanging out in basements, the majority of teens generally enjoy being intoxicated. I believe that this crowd of kids fit into two groups narrowed down to their preferences: drinkers and smokers. Drinkers are people who enjoy alcoholic beverages, and smokers are those who enjoy marijuana. Some may think that these substances are too similar to be compared; they’re both illegal (for teens) and known to have harmful health effects to the users. Experience with both has taught me these drugs actually are very different and from what I’ve observed, fit two contrasting personalities.…

There are many people use cannabis even they are adult, teenager, and child. “The most recent British Crime Survey found that 5% of 16–29 year olds had used more than one drug in one month” (Ramsay and Partridge, 1999). “There is a substantial body of literature on the reasons or motivations that people cite for using alcohol, particularly amongst adult populations. For example, research on heavy drinkers suggested that alcohol use is related to multiple functions for use” (Edwards et al., 1972; Sadava, 1975). “There is evidence that for many young people, the decision to use a drug is based on a rational appraisal process, rather than a passive reaction to the context in which a substance is available” (Boys et al.2000a; Wibberley and Price,…
