The scenario that was used is an example of Social Learning Systems theory. Due to the new environment the student was experiencing not fitting in or maybe not belonging to the environment because of the language barrier. As an adult making a major change in life sometimes seems scary or unbearable. When a student is coming into a larger environment they can feel isolated or no one will understand their needs.

The Cross-cultural Language handbook identifies 5 learning systems: The Emotional Learning System, The Social Learning System, The Physical Learning System, The Reflective Learning System, and The Cognitive Learning System. Each learning system promotes healthy development that can be used towards ELL’s learning systems. The Social Learning System states all humans wants to belong and develop skills, awareness of self, others in their environment. At my school everyone promotes students collaborating with each other to make learning more effective. Students in my classroom are provided with many opportunities to collaborate with each other through centers and working with their elbow partner. I call this co-teaching among students because one person will take the role of a leader while the other students follow. One rule in my classroom is we work as a team so everyone can achieve and reach their highest potential in their studies. When anyone shuts down nothing will get accomplish and makes it difficult for them to engage in developing new skills, etc. The staff at my school is always motivating the students and celebrating their success. One reward system I have place in my classroom is a ticket system. A student can receive a ticket for several things such as, good behavior, homework, participation, and walking in a straight line. At the end of the week they can shop at my store that has many interesting things they like. In addition, when a student answers a question right during whole group instruction the other students will yell out “YOU GOT IT”! If they get the answer wrong the students will yell out “ITS COOL”!
