Girls always have trouble accepting their body type. Especially in today’s time, it’s hard to feel good about your body image when constantly reminded by commercials or social media that use the super skinny girls as their ideal icon. The look of this century is to be skinny and toned. Even if girls are in the healthy category, they still may feel fat when looking at pictures of these skinny women. Girls all around the world try to achieve this look, but it doesn’t always happen as fast or as easy as they please. Girls start to become desperate. Social media and US culture promote poor body images causing low self esteem, unnatural addictive behaviors, and eating disorders for girls of all ages.
Self esteem is severely brought down when girls compare their weight with a social media “model”. Overweight girls tend to be dissatisfied and uncomfortable with their bodies. This leads to stress or anger. Girls need to get the right amount of nutrients when eating. If a person doesn't get enough, then it causes great side effects. Bulimia is when a person eats but then throws it up later. “Frequent vomiting causes decaying tooth enamel, swollen glands, a sore throat and a puffy face” (Kowalski, 3). Vomiting can cause serious stomach problems as well. People with bulimia tend to go on huge eating sprees then throw it all up a few hours later. Both of these disorders are highly addictive and are hard to stop. Girls that have committed these tend to get too skinny (skinnier than the models they see) and can’t find a way to stop their disorder.
