Social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, is a way of communication that has completely revolutionized our way of spread information during the last decade. Nowadays we are able to share global information just through a fast click and within just a few minutes, millions of people have seen it. This phenomenon is something that also has taken a political spin off, for example has the Obama campaign created a special playlist for all Obama-supporters1. The combination of the ability to reach people trough social media and the fact that social media is used as a way of communicate very serious subjects, such as election campaigning, creates a interesting topic, which this essay will be about.
In this essay I am going to present three different situations where social media has been one of the key factors for political movements. The three events are:
Kony 2012 on Facebook
Carl Bildt on Twitter
Political revolts in middle eastern countries
Kony2012 is a campaign that was created on an initiative by the American organization Invisible children2. Invisible children are an organization that works with human rights related issues with a connection to children. The Kony2012 campaign is created to inform the world about Joseph Kony, in hope to prevent his leadership in Uganda. Kony is the leader of the paramilitary LRA, Lord’s Resistance Army, which has conducted violence operation in Uganda to establish a theocracy3. The last thirty years has Kony and his guerilla army used over 30.000 children as sex slaves and soldiers. The Kony2012 movement is promoted through a youtube video, which has then been distributed through Twitter, blogs but mostly Facebook. The video has got over 104 millions of views and more than 3.5 million people has bought the rescue kit which they claim will increase the chance to stop Joseph Kony and create justice.
