The topic that I selected is ‘social networking sites is really well for students, or bring them more potential problems’. The two articles that I chose are respectively focused on the potential problem in future career for undergraduate caused by SNS, and how SNS transform the relationship between students and teachers.
In this article ‘Students and social networking sites: the posting paradox’, Millera, Parsonsb and Liferb (2009) point out that social networking sites (SNS) has been the most popular tool for undergraduate students at both communication and entertainment aspect. However, the contents that students update and shared on the websites often become a kind of material which will affect their future career to some degree. The authors (2009) explain how SNS produce negative impact for students when they find jobs by using the approach of investigation report.
The authors (2009) state that student submit their personal information to SNS in order to share with their friends and known-audience, but in fact their information are often used by employers to obtain the background information which cannot be easily achieved by face-to-face interview, such as marital status, sexual orientation, religious affiliation and so on. According to the data, the authors (2009) also note that majority of internet investigations cause the negative effect to the candidates; a little part of interviewee even lost the relevant job for this reason. More surprisingly, figure show that 34% of candidates do not realize that sharing content on social networking website will bring them such serious consequence (2009).
The authors (2009) analysis that students visit SNS for three basically purposes which are sharing feelings, viewing the link that friend shared and update pictures. It gives the opportunity for employers to understand what kinds of person the applicants often touch with, and what style of information they concern about. The authors (2009)
