Social Norms In The Workplace
For this week’s discussion I decided to violate a norm at work. I am a tutor and I usually tutor about 4-5 students in a classroom. When I was getting hired, I was told that as a tutor I should always be on time, dress in business casual clothes and be professional. This week I decided to go into to work in jeans, a T-shirt, and flip-flops. I walked in to work like any other day and just started walking toward my classroom. From my peripheral vision, I could see my boss staring at me from head to toe. It was a quick walk by, but I could feel her eyesight following me from the moment I walked in until the moment I stepped foot into my classroom. At first, I was very uncomfortable because I knew how much I stood out and to be honest, I …show more content…
I really do hate the feeling of wearing clothes I would be so uncomfortable in and it makes working a lot harder. Society, including me, all wants to be comfortable in work places, but wearing what is considered comfortable is “wrong.” Findings from Muzader Sherif explained that social norms develop because “ we have a strong desire to be “correct” – to behave in an appropriate manner – and behaving consistently with social norms help us attain that goal” (266). That was one foundation to it and another “is the desire to be accepted by others and liked by them” (266). They are both very true and the second one really relates to my norm violation. Even though I was comfortable and having fun in my clothes, my boss and parents of the students would not like it. They would feel like it is a work and school environment, but I was dressed like I was not respecting that environment. So to them, they would find it very hard to accept me as a tutor for the job and for the students because I did not look professional. I was able to learn from the different perspectives from this experience, but I would not dress improperly to work

How an individual dresses impacts how he or she is perceived in the eyes of others. Often times, the way an individual appears in public leaves him or her open to becoming labeled either favorably or unfavorably. Members of society will often judge an individual’s appearance therefore denying any opportunity to know the “inner person.” In today’s society, some of the socially acceptable ways to dress seem to include wearing pajamas in public venues, wearing revealing outfits, and wearing pants so low that one’s underwear is clearly visible. The contents of this paper discuss attitudes and whether or not wearing such outfits is acceptable in society, in workplaces, and in schools.…

In a normal functioning society, people are expected to behave and respect social norms. A norm is a set of informal understandings which regulate the behavior of members of a society (Norms). Norms are accepted by groups of members in a society. Folkways are norms that are experienced by all members of society in our daily lives. If a folkway is broken or, society does not make a significant outcome of it. It is still noticed by members. For Example, People wait in lines to purchase goods in every store. If a person were to skip in front of people in the line, the group that is the line will see that as a breaking of a folkway. Someone may speak up and make the person go the back of the line, or people might not say anything. Regardless, skipping the line will be observed by the members of the society.…

Durkheim acknowledges that crime is essential in society. The aberration of a crime helps to define mora boundaries as well as serves as a reminder to obey social norms (RULES OF SOCIOLOGY METHOD). The Hisbah patrol cities to enforce the rules, and citizens find comfort in this dominating regulation (Vice News 2014). Criminals are shown to be grateful for their incarceration and whippings because it brings them closer to god, or as Durkheim would say, social norms. The punishment of criminals also brings communities togethers. They join to discipline deviances, creating a strong collective conscious with the desire to set social facts back in place. In one instance of many, a man convicted of murder was crucified and displayed in the public…

Many individuals may believe that gender stereotypes and typical norms amongst the sexes are long gone, but these traditional views for both men and women, according to society, are still quite prevalent today. This human experience, that men and women both have specific roles to play in society, has been around since the beginning of time and will most likely continue for decades and centuries to come. Men are viewed, by societies standards, as being strong, dominant (at least more dominant than a women), leaders, and they should always restrain from showing weakness. Ronald Levant, a physiologist, explains in his article Men and Masculinity that men are prone to be raised as their fathers were,…

Ralph Waldo Emerson, an American poet once wrote “the value of a dollar is social, as it is created by society.” Throughout time society has become a “parent” to the many people. Society is the most influential aspect of life in today’s world. Many factors influence a person’s life, such as the media, work and school. Going back to Emerson, people have taken the place of the dollar in his quote. An individual is no longer valued by what he thinks of himself, he is valued by what society thinks of him. What does this mean? In order to be accepted in society there are “social norms” that one has to follow. If one does not live by these norms, then you are be ridiculed and you become the outsider for this.…

Looking at their reaction, I feel as if I am doing something terrible. It feels awkward and it even surprise me that they would have such extreme reaction. I feel embarrassed being the spotlight for something that is inappropriate. However, on the other hand it’s actually an amazing experience since it help me understand that society don’t accept people that break the cultural norms. People tend to favor those that follow social norms because it makes behavior predictable. People often will respond negatively toward any form of deviance because they think that it’s opposing the right way of doing…

After this experiment, I founded that, when people are put out of there norms, they become very uncomfortable, and uneasy. Both of the participants claimed they thought I was strange to stand close to them and it made them very uncomfortable. I don’t think most people think about these norms but only unit they are broken or violated. I don’t many people realize how important norms are and how much of an impact they can make on a society. In this specific norm, I believe it is important because it is respecting the individual by not violating his or hers personal space. It is a sign of respect and acknowledgement. Social norms are important because they can bring a society together by following these norms. People know what is right and…

In the article, “Student says she was forced to wear an embarrassing outfit after violating the dress code.” written by Rebecca Klein, talks about the unfair dress code policy and the embarrassing punishment that follows. Miranda Larkin, 15, was wearing a skirt that was past her fingertips and just above her knees. She was told that her skirt was ‘too short’ and was sent to the office to change into a school-provided outfit. This outfit was a big, bright yellow t-shirt and red baggy sweatpants that was labeled “Dress Code Violation”. Instantly, Miranda started to bawl and broke out into hives all over her neck-she had to walk around in those clothes for the rest of the day until her mother picked her up from school.…

A virtual community consists of social norms just like the real world. Thus, it also creates social pressure that convinces people to conform online. The goal of this assignment is to violate the social norms on social media. Norm breaking reveals the hidden rules that dictate our thoughts and behaviors in social interactions. Instagram is an app that I use religiously and spend a lot of time on. For this experiment, I posted 6 mundane photos that are trash can, plastic bag, doorknob, spoon, and a dirty sock. I also used exuberant hashtags such as “#amazing”, “#beautiful”, “#lifeisgood” and “#happy”. I have always worked hard to create and maintain a positive reputation on Instagram by posting impeccable or extremely filtered photographies.…

Past researches have established that if a person faces any kind of injustice or uncivil behavior at workplace, it affects his/her overall mental health (Laschinger, Wong, Regan, Young-Ritchie & Bushell, 2013; Rai, 2015). Pearson et al., (2000) conduct an exhaustive poll and point out that a vast majority of employees have witnessed more than one act of incivility (verbal or non-verbal abuse) at their workplace. In 2011, a research conducted by Porath & Pearson reported that a shocking 98% of respondents have experience uncivil behavior at their workplace. Further the research revealed that from the above victims, 78% admitted that their commitment towards the organization declined due to such experiences (Porath & Pearson, 2013). Another…

Sometimes school forgets to think about the feelings of girls when they tell them that they are violating the dress code. The school administers has been rude about the dress code, and how they address the problem. Teachers has called out girls for their clothing, and they were rude instead of being polite by taking the girl aside and quietly talking to her (“Rosalind Classroom Conversation”). I don’t believe that the teachers are realizing they are being rude about telling the girls that they are violating a dress code, but before they say anything they should stop to think about the appropriate way to address the problem. When the school administrators call out girls for their dress code, the student who is being called out starts to feel…

There has been a public outcall of a woman teacher in Atlanta who was called out on wearing inappropriate clothing to teach her 4th graders. In one picture, she is seen wearing tight jeans, a t-shirt, and a baseball cap (Fourth-Grade Teacher). According to “Secondary Student’s Perceptions of Teachers Based on Attire” by Frank Till, when asking a wide number of teachers, many teachers responded that they are treated less professional and less respected when wearing jeans and tee-shirts. The teachers who were asked work for Midland Park School District in New Jersey which does not have a dress code that is written for teachers. The absence of this code is making the teachers not put as much effort into their appearance while getting ready for work. Figure 1 is a picture from Weekly Devolution that shows how teachers have evolved by dressing more casually and casually. It shows the last teacher barely wearing anything. By not having dress codes for teachers, it also makes the children/teens feel like it is not important to dress well in society. Karina Bland wrote in the Arizona Republic, “In Arizona and across the country, school boards and superintendents increasingly are adopting dress codes and guidelines for teachers and other school staff, staying they should set an example for students with their own attire.” In contrast, this article also brings…
