Social Policy Practice

How is policy practice similar to and different from planned changed at the micro level? Social work is always going to be affected by social policies and laws because they are a part of working with clients at all levels and include how services may be delivered which can be good or bad depending on the policies themselves. “Social policy is defined as a decision made by public or governmental authorities regarding the assignment and allocation of resources, rights, and responsibilities and expressed in laws and governmental regulations and social welfare policy is often applied to those social policies that focus on the distribution of economic benefits to those in need” (Garthwait, 2014, p.114-115). Policies of social and financial support are “those that are intended to help or encourage people to carry out their roles and responsibilities and meet the basic needs for food, shelter, and so on. Policies of protection are “those that seek to protect people from harm and exploitation, especially for those who are most vulnerable. Examples are policies related to child abuse, domestic violence, the frail elderly, and to groups that often subjected to discrimination and oppression” (Garthwait, 2014, p.118).
Policies of rehabilitation and remediation are “those intended to correct or minimize the impact of certain disabling conditions such as serious mental illness, restorative justice, and chronic illness” (Garthwait, 2014,

For me, one area to consider would be getting involved in advocacy groups and that might include the Alzheimer’s Association, Long-Term Care Associations, and Healthcare Associations to name a few examples.
