Schools and parents don’t want their children to feel embarrassed if retained, so they pass them.
Educators or parents may not want to damage a student's self- esteem or put him or her at greater risk of suffering from the social, emotional, behavioral, and psychological problems often associated with grade retention ( ). The student will not re-learn the entire grade again even though they didn’t learn much before. It may not be the student's fault for struggling because they can be slow learners, and if they are they should've had a little more help than others to meet their requirements. Social promotion can increase their learning and be more enhanced than it would be through retention. It is said that it decreases the chances of students actually dropping out and keeps them in school. Social promotion eliminates the need of high classroom numbers or additional teachers being on staff for extraordinarily high numbers for certain years, creating predictability and stability within the district budget (
).
Social promotion does set the bar low, because if the expectation of learning is set low then the students won’t try. In the past, students receive different levels of attention based on their learning abilities to learn, and social promotion takes away this personal touch because everyone winds up being treated the same way ( ). Social promotion lets a student still pass from grade to grade even though they don’t try. If everyone can pass so easily to the next grade, then why should there be school at all. School is for students to learn, to become a better person, and to become somebody in the future. A person can't pass college without having any knowledge, and they can't have a job without having some certain knowledge from school. School may not be for everyone, but everyone can be educated to do better. Children think it’s okay to slack off a good deal of time that not doing homework is not a big deal. Copying from their friends is easier to barely get by and finish the year without even trying to accomplish their assignments.
In conclusion, social promotion is both beneficial and detrimental to students. There are many students that have been promoted without learning what they needed. A few turned out fine, but others are always trying to act out. Schools need to set their expectations high for students, so students can see they need to try more. If they are students that need more help, teachers should work with them more. There are debates about how social promotion is good or bad, but children are different from one another. Their mind doesn’t work the same way obviously, but they try to learn in the pace. The problem about it is sometimes the students fall behind because they don’t care or have trouble at home which makes life hard. They give up easily that’s why schools need to keep them motivated to do better.
