Slavery started because of the Columbian exchange. Slaves weren't the only ones who worked on a plantation. Indentured servants also worked on plantations. The difference between an indentured servant and a slave is that Indentured servants chose to work on a plantation. Meanwhile, slaves didn't have a choice to work on a plantation. There are many differences and similarities of Indentured servants and slaves. Some similarities would be that they both didn't have freedom. Also, they both had hard labor and were giving food and shelter. Some difference between them
is that slaves were African American and indentured servants were white. Another difference is that slaves could be bought and sold at any time while indentured servants just had to stay in one land for a certain amount of time. Indentured Servants would sign a contract and most likely receive some type of reward after their years of working. Nothing big besides maybe some land and etc. Over times slavery got worse. For example on a timeline called “Timeline of slavery in Colonial America 1600-1705” provided that the first 20 African slaves that were sold into slavery in 1619. Then in 1626, the timeline provides that any child born from an enslaved woman will become a slave. Later on, in 1694 the timeline says that the demand for slaves was dramatically increasing.
