How I Feel About Spain By: Hannah Frank

People from Spain were very greedy/ selfish and they didn’t care for anybody other than their selves and their king. Spain also forced the natives into slavery because they refused to convert to Christianity. The spanish colonization was very untrustworthy and they were all about tricking people just to get what they wanted. Spain was greedy/ selfish, forceful, and untrustworthy. People from Spain were greedy and selfish people. The natives said that, “Columbus would give Spain all the gold they needed, and as many slaves as they asked for.” Spain didn’t do much on their own. They had slaves and servants. The natives said that, “Two Christians thought that it would be fun to take parrots and behead two boys for fun.” They didn’t care for anybody other than themselves. Once again, Spain was very selfish and greedy. Spain was very forceful towards the natives. Spain said, “We want the natives to convert to Christianity (our religion), but they refused so we’re making them be our slaves.” Las Casas said, “The Indians had no religion, or at least no temples.” This made Spain upset that they had no religion so that’s why they wanted the natives to become Christians.
Because of the fact that the natives were slaves for Spain, Spain became stronger than them and grew more powerful and could force the natives to do anything they wanted them to do. Due to this evidence, I can conclude that Spain was very forceful. Spain was untrustworthy and it made it hard for the natives to know who to trust. People from Spain said, “We wanted to please our king so sometimes we would attack the Indians.” Some other people even said,
“Because Spain was untrustworthy, when the natives got sick, they would end up suffering and dying because they didn’t know who to turn to for

help.” Spain would try to trick the natives into thinking that they were there for them when really they just wanted to turn on them

The Iberian’s American empire was one of the largest and influential in history. As always, throughout history, great empires were driven by their social structures, economic systems, military expeditions, and so on. In the Spanish American empire, the social structure was paramedical. The foundation of the society was a cast and a class system. The most high ranked was Spaniards (Peninsular born in Europe) and were followed by Creoles considered as Europeans but born in Americas. African origin, native Amerindian, and the produce of their mixture that gave birth to a new race called Castas; filled the bottom lines of the pyramid. Undoubtedly, because of the greedy exploitation by the Spanish, the reputation of Christianity worsened. In particular, Las Casas shares the story of a native lord named Hatuey set to execution for escaping the Spanish. Knowing the Spanish were Christian and sought Heaven in the afterlife, Hatuey told the friar at the execution that he desired to go to Hell. Of course, when reading about the many cruelties the native inhabitants suffered at the hands of the Spaniards, I understand Las Casas hoped to end these exploits with his writings. At some point, after Las Casas provided a copy of his account to Juan Martnez de Silceo, the archbishop of Toledo, Spain’s ruler received it.…

They had one goal in mind and that was to claim land and destroy anything in their way. Unfortunately their vicious acts of violence weren’t what did most of the damage to the natives. They carried diseases like influenza, malaria and measles with them and so millions of the natives died from these diseases. After decades of this type of treatment from the Conquistadors, the Spanish Crown realized that if they wanted to have permanent Catholic colonies in North America they would have to change. In 1542 Charles I created “The New Laws of the Indies” which in it he stated “That having for many years had will and intention as leisure to occupy ourselves with the affairs of the Indies, on account of their great importance, as well in that touching the service of God our Lord and increase of his holy Catholic faith, as in the preservation of the natives of those parts, and the good government and preservation of their persons.”…

Portola had been suffering hunger and thirst from the journey, so they would try hard to survive which opened up trade with the Native Americans. Along the way, Spain would conquer new territories in order for them to expand its empire; they would build outposts and missions all over California. One of the purposes for outposts and missions was to, “spread Christian faith across the land, irreparably transforming the native population” (Gaspar De Portola). Spain's encroachment along the coast of California helped them exchange new cultural ideas; this benefited the Spanish because more and more natives are transforming the native population.…
