Spanish Culture Essay
When I moved to California eight years ago, I always ask myself “why people think that because we speak Spanish we are from the same country and we are classify as Latinos?” at the beginning it was so offensive that people will ask me “Are you Latina from Mexico or EL Salvador?” and used to get so upset and tell them “No! I am from Ecuador and I am Hispanic”. Despite, the fact that Latinos and Hispanics speaks Spanish as their primer language of communication, this does not mean that we are all from the same country. First, it is well known that must of Hispanics and Latinos speak Spanish to communicate with each other’s. However, this does not mean that we are all from the same place and also that we all speak the same Spanish. In fact, the meaning and use of words are very different in each ethnicity, meaning that the use of a word that for me it is not offensive, for others can be a bad word and even …show more content…
For example, Mexican, Salvadorian, and Guatemalan eat tortillas, enchiladas, sopes, beans, rice, tacos, burritos and much more. However, what people does not know about Hispanics is that we are all from South America and even though we all are Hispanics our countries have huge differences between culture and food. For example, in Ecuador we eat guinea pig at any time of the year and can be found everywhere; unlike, Peru, Colombia, and Brazil to find guinea pigs depends in what part of the country we are and the time of the year. On the other hand, Latinos are consider all the counties from Central America. In this countries the food and culture are more similar within each other’s. For example, I know people from Mexico, El Salvador, and Guatemala and their culture and food look a lot alike; they eat tortillas, spicy food, have the same way preparing food and even their culture look

Only 16% of the population brave the rural mountains of this narrow natural resource rich country. The indigenous people (7% of the countries population) make up almost half of the portion of the mountainous population. This section of the population is extremely culture rich in comparison to the rest of the country which is Mestizo (a mix of indigenous and European decent). They have had lots of culture mixing as it includes European culture from more than ten different countries. This has caused…

In the western area of the U.S, the most common Spanish speakers are Mexican, making their food the most prevalent. This has created a disconnect in the minds of the residents because they automatically assume any Spanish person or Latin food they come across is automatically from Mexico. In reality, Mexican food is uniquely known for its heavy use of spice and the main ingredient in their dishes, is corn. Even the candy is coated in a layer of chili. In an article with detailed facts about Mexico it is stated “Mexican candy is not only a piece of Mexican food, but also a piece of Mexican art. The “Calaveras de Azúcar”, or sugar skulls, are specially prepared for the Dia de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead” (Mexican Food 7). Dominican or Puerto Rican however, have a strong Caribbean influence so their food is more focused on flavor then spice. The island herbs are combined into a paste called sofrito, the main seasoning that makes their food so distinguishable. Other popular foods are mango and plantains, the green banana. Spain, the country that every other one is supposed to have descended from, would not be seen as typical Spanish food. The people eat in small portions called Tapas that contain a huge amount of sea food because of the ports all around the country. Just by looking at how drastically different the foods of some of the countries are, it is hard to…

The Hispanic/Latino group is very complex, we are all the same, but at the same time, we are not. The reason why I say this is because if you take a look only in one country considered part of the Hispanic/Latino group you will find out that even in the same country people are very different depending on the region. Let’s just put this more simple, take a look into your own family, and you will realize that even though you are all family and you love each other, every single one of you is very different, with some similarities of course. The Hispanics one are those of us that speak Spanish, while the Latinos are those of us that come from Latin America, I know, this makes not same to me either. There are many unanswered and unasked questions…

In my opinion there cannot be a unique or singular Hispanic/Latino identity. I feel that there may be several factors that play into whether or not someone considers themselves to be Hispanic or Latino such as where they were born, where their ancestors were born, what language they speak, race, religion and culture. There is so much diversity in the world that it is hard to pin point a person to one specific racial identity. I do believe that people can feel a strong sense of belonging to the Hispanic or Latino identity based on a combination of some of these things but that does not mean that everyone who identifies with some of the categories will identify them self as Hispanic or Latino. The term Latino is usually used in reference to people who are originally from Latin America or who trace their heritage back to Latin America. The term Latin America itself refers to many nations collectively who speak some romance of the language of “Latin” such as Spanish, portuges and even French. As far as the term Hispanic, it usually refers to all Spanish speakers although that is not always appropriate since it implies a direct heritage to Spain. I do agree with the positions expressed because I feel that it is difficult to put people into one box due to the amount of diversity a migration we have. These issues are important to me as I am married to a Dominican and my daughter would be consider in part of Hispanic descent. They are also relevant in society because race plays a huge hand in almost every aspect we deal with.…

America nowadays is knows as cultural diversity country and considered a home for many different cultures and races. The Hispanic term is not either a race or ethnicity, but is considered an American term use in USA to defined people who speak Spanish or their ancestors spoke Spanish at one point in their life. According to “U.S. Census 2000 State & County Statistical QuickFacts” “Hispanics or Latinos are those people who classified themselves in one of the specific Spanish, Hispanic, or Latino categories listed on the Census 2000 questionnaire” Therefore, sometimes people in general stereotype Hispanics in America as they all speak Spanish and have the same ethnic traits. Also People stereotype Hispanic as we are…

Culturally, Mexican Americans have a beautiful array of unique traditions and values. Spirituality plays a large role in many Mexican American families. At 61%, the majority of Mexican Americans are Christian and belong to the Roman Catholic Church. (Pew Research Hispanic, 2015) Another major aspect of Mexican American culture is the emphasis placed on the extended family. Due to the fact that Mexican Americans are a collectivist and interdependent group, the extended family is one of the greatest avenues in which Mexican American people can retain and foster their culture. (Flores & Carey, 2000)…

The legal system in Hispanic immigrants that live in the United States involves legal cases on Hispanic immigrants. The country recently has experienced a great number of Hispanic deportations. During these years that President Barack Obama has been the main head of the country, the United States experienced a lot of Hispanic deportations, more than last years, deporting 235,413 immigrants back to their country. The reasons on why immigrants are deported are that immigrants are illegally in the country, have no license to drive and are fined or arrested for not having a driving license or permission to be in the country legally. Immigrants need to be legal in the country to not be deported and have benefits that the country offers. In this…
