Social Work Goals Essay
My goals and dreams aren’t gigantic. I simply wish to try and help people on a daily basis who weren’t fortunate in life. If there is anyway that I can possibly shed some light towards all the current difficult problems of todays society then I have met my goals. I want to improve their situation, at least in my city of Baltimore where it is much needed. I simply want to find out why there is so much racial division in our communities and why so many people are unhappy in their daily lives. I already have an uphill battle because when I first started my quest into becoming something more than just a person on the sideline, I had to come to the realization that this career change would have a negative impact on me financially. Hopefully it …show more content…
In several parts of this country social workers have reacted emotionally to the grand juries decisions not to indict the officers charged with the deaths of several police involved deaths including the one here in Baltimore of Freddie Grey. Unfortunately living here in Baltimore, which in the past years has shown signs of embedded racism, most of the roles by a social worker have been now upgraded to that of a psychologist and therapist all in one. No matter if it is safeguarding an innocent child from parental neglect and abuse or eradicating racial profiling, social workers routinely make attempts to expose all the injustice they see. My goal is to promote and bring about change. I believe this can only be done from the bottom up. By helping to mold and change the thought process of today’s youth into having a better understanding of the circumstances surrounding their environment and how they can make changes to better themselves as well as those around them. I just want to try and accomplish this as a social worker. My kid’s future matters more to me then the present. What they see around them and how every person they interact with can significantly change their direction and for this reason I have chosen social work as my field of study and with time and patience, one day of my new

Throughout the course we learned about different fields of social work, the complications that come with the job, and the different people you will encounter. Thus, changing our thoughts and feelings towards social work. Before taking the class our thoughts about social workers were more or less simple minded. I say this because most of us thought social workers simply deal with children and some consider them “child snatchers”. After getting the opportunity to take the class, we learned there is more to social workers than we thought. Social workers work with different ages, races, religions, and genders. We also learned how social workers work with these different populations (Morales, Sheafor, & Scott, 2010). During class we discussed a…

Ever since I was in fourth grade, I have enjoyed helping kids and watching them learn new things and grow. The best feeling is helping children with something and watching their faces light up as they discover what they can do all by themselves. While in fourth and fifth grade, I was a part of the buddy program at my school which entailed spending every lunch in the special education classroom at my elementary school. A trait I possess is being sequential and that is useful for the career I want because it will help me with staying organized and grading papers. I am an analyzer, I like to know what is going on around me and love to know how things work. This is a trait that comes in handy with being an elementary school teacher.…

Deciding what populations and types of clients with whom I want to work with, in the field of social work, is one of the most important decisions ever, regarding my career. From as early as childhood, I have always known that I want to work with children in whatever career path I embarked on. After deciding education and teaching was not the career I wanted to choose as my forever career, I always envisioned myself being a child and family social worker. I feel so comfortable with this population because I have always felt a need to want to improve the quality of life for families and children. I did not have the best childhood-due to experiencing homelessness, addictions and having to mature at an early age, but I knew the warm feeling that I received when my family was together and thriving was the best. According to the Code of Ethics of the National Association of Social Work (NASW), “the primary mission of the social work profession is to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppresses, and living in poverty” (NASW 2010). Children are one of the most vulnerable and helpless beings in the world, so they need someone to fight for them. This is the population is where I feel I can help to enhance the social functioning of children and families the most.…

I am applying for the Gift Fund and Social Work Advocate scholarships. My work ethic and commitment to education qualifies me for both these scholarships. Two of the most treasured values my parents passed on to me were a strong work ethic and an appreciation for what I earn. Growing up, it was my responsibility to pay for things that I wanted, and my parents provided me with work opportunities around the house to earn the money. As a result, I learned not only how to plan, save, and work hard for the things I wanted, but I learned to value those things as a result of all the hard work required to obtain them. Today, minus remaining on my parents’ insurance policy, I continue to pay for all my expenses, including my tuition, books, rent, and…

There are many reasons why I chose a profession in the social work field. Some of the reasons why I chose to work in this area stem from my childhood experiences. As a child, I was pretty much on my own, my parents were pretty much absent and I had to take care of myself and sometimes them, I also took care of my siblings. The only teacher I had to encourage me was my 7th grade Social Studies teacher, Mr. Schaal, (he was killed in a car wreck after I started high school) with no guidance, I began to get into trouble. I had to grow up fast, so I always was the “motherly” figure among my group of friends (although I did let them talking me into things).…

Long-term goals I have two long-term goals in mind for the next 5-10 years: (a) register to practice social work in South Africa, and (b) organize support groups for women there. When I left South Africa in 2002 to study in the United States, my interest was always to advance my education and experience in different social work programs which could benefit the communities of South Africa in the end. My ultimate goal is to go back to South Africa and work in collaboration with communities and social workers there, as well as those who have interest in protecting women’s rights, with the goal of influencing lawmakers to pass strict laws to protect women and children victims of abuse. To practice any social work service there, the South African Council for Social Service Professionals (SACSSP) requires anyone with foreign credentials to register with the council.…
