the matrix and interact against it. As part of the functionalist perspective, it is a very organized , stable orderly society. The Matrix shows a major form of the conflict perspective which is man against machine. The Matrix and humans are groups in a constant fight for control. The Matrix is at the verge of taking over the entire human race but some humans known as “ the people of Zion” fight for the rest of humanity and to maintain its existence. At a point the Matrix conflicts its own existence and being the protector of humanity. Neo meets with Morpheus and experiences cultural shock.
Everything he knows was completely different from what exists among Morpheus and his people. Neo is awakened to the reality that his life has been a dream and his mind is run by a program from the Matrix. Morpheus interacts with Neo from this moment to free him from what he thinks he knows to what is real.
Morpheus frees Neo from the Matrix because he believes Neo is the one to destroy the Matrix and free humanity, but Neo does not believe that. Neo faces a role conflict in that he believes he is just an ordinary person and not “the one” who is powerful enough to destroy the Matrix. To confirm that Neo is the one , Morpheus takes him to see the Oracle who has power of foresight, and can predict the future. The Oracle is believed to be the oldest and wisest among them, an ageism that all old people are wise and should be respected and younger people should seek guidance from them. One can say this type of ageism is positive because it celebrates rather than denigrates older age. The Oracle tells Neo what he needs to know and confirms he is the savior of humanity. The Oracle also reveals to Trinity, the lady who introduced Neo to Morpheus that she will fall in love with
Neo. Trinity plays a major part in Neo’s life. The love between them is very power and it shows near the end of the movie when an agent who works for the Matrix kills Neo. Trinity kisses his dead body and he miraculously returns to life. This shows latent functions from functionalism theory which means unsought consequences of a social process. They are suppose to work together to destroy the Matrix only but they fall in love. Manifest functions also a part of functionalism means sought or anticipated consequences which is to destroy the Matrix.
