Discrimination in American society has existed for as long as America has. It is not as easily recognized now as it once was but when discovered each occurrence is a major reminder of America’s history of discriminating against its citizens and unfortunately it will continue to exist. Discrimination encompasses attitudes and behaviors of prejudice, stereotyping, and racism. It is based on various specifications as well. Any of these are displayed against an individual or group of people that may share similar aspects. These can be based on age, gender, sex, religion, race, marital status and many other labels.

every facet of American life. It can be disparate or differential. And in many states; dependent upon what specifics were conducted, very illegal to be discriminate. People aren’t born with the ability to discriminate. Kids are not born with discriminatory mentalities; the ability to discriminate is taught to them. It is something that they learn from their parents and teachers as well as any influential person they know.
Even though discrimination is still very present in society today it is more monitored legally to prevent expensive problems.
Because discrimination affects the way people behave toward one another there are now laws in place to prevent discrimination and give victims protective options should it happen anyway. This extends into the work place, for example discrimination affect if a person gets hired for a new job or experiences discrimination in the work place as an employee.
Society struggles to avoid stereotyping an individual or group of individuals. But when actions are conducted based on those stereotypes it becomes prejudice. This can become very dangerous because unequal treatment emphasize negative emotions.
Prejudice is a form of discrimination. By definition, prejudice is a behavior that isn’t founded on an experience or a reason for action. It is a behavior that causes harm and possibly injury against someone or a group of people. It is simply a biased and unfavorable personal opinion that casts prejudgment and violates the rights of others. Usually these are related to opinions about someone’s race or gender or sexual orientation. But it can be based on a variety of
topics.
Racism is easily recognized. Racism is a definition by an individual or group of individuals that a specific race has specific characteristics that deems that race superior to other races. Unfortunately instead of improving and discontinuing racism it seems to be increasing on a global level. It has a potential presence in every facet of life just as prejudice does. It too has been the basis for laws written and enacted to protect individuals.
Stereotyping is common as well. Stereotypes are generalizations about a person or group of people in consideration of their characteristics. This can be about their race or gender or anything specific that can be isolated and deemed a condition of that person. For example, someone may form the opinion that a person cannot attain and retain a job based on the characteristic of that person’s race or gender.
Regardless of the mannerism in which someone is discriminated against, it is an unfair assimilation and unfounded opinion with the intention of limiting or eliminating another individual. Equal protection is a right available to everyone. Laws are written providing protection as well as legal options for victims of discrimination. It is the obligation and right of each individual to comply with these laws in the workplace, and in public in general. In my job field and more specifically in the company in which I am employed, avoiding all aspects of discrimination is critical. Not only is information about discrimination and the laws posted, we receive consistent and regulatory training to ensure our compliance with laws and policies related to discrimination. Overall I do not believe that discrimination will ever be void of society in general. It is something that is usually passed down from generation to generation and will continue to be passed down unless discontinued by the individual’s personal and conscious choice. And with respect to the laws instituted in society, I believe that they are very necessary. I do not think that there will be a moment in the future when we will not need laws to be enforced to protect and prevent discrimination.
