The Socratic Seminar that took place on November 13 revolved around the idea of three different topics from different essays. The first essay, “Superman and Me” by Sherman Alexie, talks about the author’s personal experience as an Indian boy who taught himself to read. The next essay, “Consider the Lobster” by David Foster Wallace, revolves around Maine’s annual Lobster Festival and what a lobster is. The final essay, “Making Toast” by Roger Rosenblatt, is about a grandfather losing his daughter and how their family works through it. While reading and annotating the essays, I had no clue as to what the connection was between the three articles. Kevin had mentioned the loss of connection between the articles during the Socratic Seminar, as he…

Keeping people out of “the cave” can be a burdensome task that requires a plentiful amount of strategy and intelligence. “The cave” may be defined as a somber place where the ignorance of those who inhabit it manifests and thrives, and this cave is an internal part of one’s mind, body, and soul. In order to keep people out of the cave, one must make certain that the confined are enlightened, the false interpretations of the real world are analyzed, the chains of limitations are released, and the truth must always be spoken. In schools, countries, and everywhere around the world, it is crucial that all inhabitants are enlightened and given the opportunity to learn, interpret, and experience the meaning of life. It is up to everyone to assist each other and speak the truth. It is up to everyone to construct the world and society in which it is healthy and safe to live. It is up to everyone to keep each other out of “the cave.”…
Professor you started by saying we will be discussing what we have learned throughout the term units one through 9. Also you told the class that you would like us to turn in our unit 9 assignments by Friday, any time by Friday night so you could have the weekend to grade and return back to us.…
My hands are shaky and sweaty. My face feels hot. My stomach churning. My heart is pounding and the noises around me just turn to a blur as I try to find something to say. My notes are all there and still I’m drawing a blank. To where is all this unnecessary stress and pain I feel coming from? Well, I’m sitting in the middle of a graded socratic seminar.…
Shoemaker’s class I had recess. Since my friends and I usually didn’t get down to the gym fast enough, we didn’t always get a ball to mess around with. So we instead decided to stay in her class during that time. We had loads of fun creating memories upon memories that will never be forgotten. Memories like when we put on impaired driving goggles and stumbled over everything. Memories of us eating all her yummy peanut butter filled pretzels and asking for help on assignments. I had grammar with a different teacher but if I did not understand something, I would ask Mrs. Shoemaker. She would always explain the homework to me. Also, if I had to write an essay she would help me and then look over it for mistakes. Making me a stronger person today, Mrs. Shoemaker never let me give…
When it comes to writing a paper, I always want other to read my paper to make sure if I did the paper write. In this class, I got to talk to my classmates about my topic and share their ideas to narrow down the topic. It also helped me develop research questions. A peer review helped me realize my mistakes and develop more ideas. Those ideas not only helped write my paper in a different way, but it also showed me what else I need in my paper to make it a better essay. One of the things I really like about this class is the feedback from the instructor. Most instructors will only show the mistakes in an assignment, but Julia showed me exactly what I did wrong and how I could fix it. Julia showed us the techniques that I wanted to learn before I move on to my next class. These skill and techniques are the one I took into a count to use for my next classes.…
Henrey treated each and every student like they were special. Mrs. Henrey acted as if all of her students were her children. She called us her daughters and sons on many occasion. She also showed us that we were special by her actions. At the beginning of every class we all got to share a happy moment that happened in the past day. This part of class was always my favorite because it was always so positive and it forced you to look on the brighter side of things. At the end of each semester, Mrs. Henrey gave every student a piece of paper that had her personal email and her phone number on it. Also on the paper was a note explaining that when we went to college, if there ever something that we needed we could email her and ask for her help. She told us that even if we were having a bad day and we wanted so homemade cookies, she would send us some…
Greece philosophers have impacted the modern world in many aspects; most people are actually unaware of how much they do to influence us. Specifically, both Aristophanes and Sappho were philosophers born in Greece and spent time discussing matters of love. Although both theorists comprehend love differently, they both relate sincerely. By means of their views of love and intimacy we can relate our lives to their concepts to have a greater understanding of what true love may mean to us.…
Mrs.Cotter’s class is really fun. She always has fun activities every day. On the first few days we did the cup game activity. This is where we would take strings tied to a rubber band. We would stretch the rubber band around the cup flip it over and try to stack the cups into a pyramid. We also did the saving sammy project. We had to get the life jacket out from under the boat and put it on Sammy without dropping him. The next project was hard. My partner and I had a string on our wrists with a tangle in between them and we had to break free and we couldn’t take the strings off our wrists.…
I know you have participated in Socratic Seminars in a variety of ways in your English classes. I go about it differently than you have experienced it in the past, I think. At the college level, I view the Socratic Seminar as an intellectual discussion/study group; students interacting with both the text and each other with the goal of preparing themselves for a culminating written assessment the following day.…
I have seen how angry Mrs. McCormick gets when people talk over her or be on their phones. Mrs. McCormick gives the student all the information needed for the project or paper. Also I learned that it helps a lot actually reading the novels. I read most of The Great Gatsby and that helped tremendously on that paper. One regret is that I for sure did less than was expected of me. I had senioritis from day one and that affected my value of work. I am satisfied with this class, I loved the free time and the great discussions in here with fellow classmates. A regret though is not working harder on those…
My reading/writing class for the fall semester at the community college in 2008 was an excellent class. How were they excellent? Well, first they always did their homework. Most of them had jobs to do during the day but they still found time to do their homework. They wrote in their journals and wrote a lot of paragraphs and then they rewrote the paragraphs. They were also excellent in another way. They really got along well with one another as a class. Some of them were very outgoing and some of them were quite shy but they respected each other and learned a lot about each other’s countries as a result. Finally, they were an excellent class because they always made the teacher laugh. Even though they had worked hard all day, they came to class in a happy mood. If they were tired, they never acted grumpy about it or if they didn’t feel well, they just kept right on working. So, you can see that this really was an excellent class and I hope that they will all do well in the future.…

This was my second time going to the women and conference and I enjoyed it. The first panel I attended was #3 Sexualities. I was interested in attending this one to see what topics they would talk about. Christina Perez introduced the three presenters and the topics of the presentations where exploring the Taboo of BDSM sexual culture, issues in Feminism: The problem with pornography and your grandmother is having sex!…
