Softball Exercise
: A 24 year old recent college graduate comes to you to improve her performance at her favorite sport, softball. She is the catcher. She has a family history of high blood pressure. She does not have any past medical history. She is has a BMI of 26, she has no issues with her blood sugar or cholesterol. She does report excruciating pain 2 days after playing softball, usually just in her quadriceps, which causes her to miss 1-2 practices per week.
She is technically overweight according to her BMI, her muscle mass needs to be put in consideration. In general, since she is a catcher she stretches her quadriceps muscles when she squats. A quadriceps strain is what she is suffering from, due to overusing her quads. Before practice a proper warm up should be performed on the muscles strained, meaning to focus on her quads with good stretching and light cardio. Instead of assuming catcher position for practice she should begin a resistance program dealing with her quads, such as using 5 lbs. elastic bands attached to an Olympic bar and performing 5 sets of 10-15 squats to train her muscles and keep them loose. Also incorporating the 5 lbs. band and tying it to the bottom of a

What would happen if we threw seventy pop-ups to different players on the softball team? That’s exactly what we wanted to find out. Softball is a fun sport, and being that everything is determined on the skill level of the team, we thought this would be as challenging as it is fun! First, let’s explain what a pop-up is. A pop-up is a fly ball; the pitcher throws the ball aiming considerably high in the air and the player is supposed to catch it. We wanted to know how many times our pitcher could throw the ball before ‘missing’ her target. Consider a catch to be a success and a dropped ball to be a failure. Assuming all the players on the team are equally skilled, we can determine a dropped ball to be the result of a ‘bad’ pitch. This,…

Baseball is a very commonly played sport. There was once a story that Abner Doubleday invented baseball in 1839 but that story was never really proved. Baseball and Softball have many contrasting characteristics that may be difficult to point out. One of them is the type of ball. Baseballs are white ball with red stitching, and have a circumference of nine inches. Softballs are yellow and have a circumference of twelve inches. Another contrasting detail is the pitching style. Baseball pitching is usually overhand or sidearm, while softball pitching must be done underhand. The History of Softball

Softball originated in Chicago on Thanksgiving Day, 1887. A group of about twenty young men had gathered in the gymnasium of the Farragut Boat Club in order to hear the outcome of the Harvard-Yale football game. After Yale's victory was announced and bets were paid off, a man picked up a stray boxing glove and threw it at someone, who hit it with a pole. George Hancock, usually considered the inventor of softball, shouted, "Let's play ball!" He tied the boxing glove so that it resembled a ball, chalked out a diamond on the floor (smaller dimensions than those of a baseball field in order to fit the gym) and broke off a broom handle to serve as a bat. What proceeded was an odd, smaller version of baseball. That game is now, 111 years later, known as the first softball game. Softball may have seen its death on the day of its birth if Hancock had not been so fascinated by it. In one week, he created an oversized ball and an undersized rubber-tipped bat and went back to the gym to paint permanent white foul lines on the floor. After he wrote new rules and named the sport indoor baseball, a more organized, yet still new, game was played. Its popularity was immediate.…

Sports should be a part of everybody’s lifestyle. There are many different types of sports, from combat sports to snow sports or even water sports, but the best type of sports are physical. One of the most outstanding physical sports is softball. Softball can be played by female athletes at many different levels. For example, travel softball, one of the most advanced ways to play, is played by elite girls between the ages of nine and twenty-three. Travel softball is a better opportunity than summer league softball because it makes any softball player a better athlete and more social by getting the opportunity to meet new people, play softball all year round, and experience more recruitment options.…
