Whether it is at practice or during a game, most of the body will get a good exercise. Some parts might get exercised more than others, depending on the positions that a player plays. If a girl is a catcher, she is most definitely going to be using her lower body more than anyone else. A catcher is constantly squatting behind home plate; therefore, her legs are the most used part in this position. Leg power is even used while pitching. As the pitcher is taking her stride off, she is using her legs to push off. The leg motion that is used by the pitcher is done every pitch. But even though the lower body is used a lot as a pitcher, the upper body is the most used part by a pitcher. The pitcher pitches in a motion that is known as “the windmill”. This motion gets its name because the arm is going around in a circle like a windmill. While the pitcher is pitching in this motion, the shoulder is the main focus area that is being put to work. The upper body also takes action while pitching. But the pitcher is not the only one who uses the upper body. In fact, the upper body is used in all positions, even batting. After a while, girls will start to learn that working together as a team helps them to win games. Leadership will then begin to grow in many of the girls. They will learn to lead the other girls and encourage them to do their best. If a player happens to have a bad play or makes a mistake the other girls on the team will help to bring that girl up so she is does get down on herself. Over time, this starts to build character in the girls. Along with leadership and character building, good sportsmanship will most likely become a side effect of playing softball. Girls will learn to treat the other team fairly, even if they do not have good sportsmanlike conduct, and to respect the decision of the umpire.
Besides strengthening the mind and body, softball is also a good way to meet new people. Girls will start to grow bonds and become great friends with each other. After the girls have been together for quite a while and have played their first few games, they will start to feel like another family. They will even be a big help with growing in leadership skills. Even when the season is over, girls might still want to stay in contact during the winter. Sometimes, when the next season is coming, girls might already know a few people that will be on the team and it will give them something to look forward
