THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
A. INTRODUCTION
Student discipline system is an essential tool for building an organized institution within a particular university. It serves as a framework in molding students in accordance to the school’s rules and regulations. The system usually determines students’ violations as well as the corresponding punishments and sanctions. It also includes basic information and the record of offenses of erring students.
Student discipline system is also present in some foreign schools. Their system includes recording of the violations of their students. A database holds the records as well as the information regarding the degree of offenses accumulated of a student violator. A university needs to have a system like this in order to effectively implement the rules inside the campus. A strict implementation of the punishments will result to organized, obedient and disciplined students. The awareness of the students that proper sanctions will be imposed to them if they violated rules will lead them to think twice before doing some actions.
Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, a state university, is an example of a campus which manually record and monitor cases of student violators. Most of the students fail to comply because there are no proper notifications that will tell them immediately to report with the OSDS regarding that matter. Another problem is that the OSDS, the department responsible for the student discipline matters, doesn’t have a good coordination with the different colleges. As a result, the punishments are implemented very late and sometimes not implemented accordingly. Those students who failed to comply will be held in the clearance before they graduated a major problem for graduating students.
The main purpose of this study is to develop an application for the OSDS that will help the OSDS to manage students' violation records as well as the sanctions through a network-based application that will
