Fuchs, Erin. "SOLITARY CONFINEMENT: 'It Doesn 't Take Long For You To Start Punishing Yourself '" Business Insider. Business Insider, 9 Sept. 2013. Web. 09 Oct. 2013. This article examines the psychological consequences of short and long term solitary confinement for prisoners in the United States aimed to disciplinary separation. Very close attention is paid to the difference of effects solitary confinement is on younger inmates rather than elders. In most states according to a report presented by the Human Rights Watch and the ACLU, solitary confinement typically is 22 hours a day in total isolation, behind a steel door. This article would be a helpful source for my paper because it demonstrates how much harm solitary confinement is causing inmates, emotionally and mentally rather than helping them to better understand the disciplinary action targeted.
Keim, Brandon. "The Horrible Psychology of Solitary Confinement.”Wired.com. Conde Nast Digital, 08 July 10, 2013. Web. 09 Oct. 2013. The lack of human interaction can have serious consequences on an inmate’s metal health; prisoners in long term isolation can put communities at risk once a prisoner is released. Studies show that consistent patterns of isolations can cause extreme anxiety, hallucinations, mood swings, and loss of impulse control. In the absence of brain stimulation, prisoners may also become hypersensitive to any stimuli at all. Often they obsess uncontrollably as if their minds don’t belong to them. Panic attacks are also routine when dealing with isolation, as is depression and loss of memory. A number of inmates often became violent and less likely to function normally in society. This article will help me with my research paper because it gives in detail how confinement affects parts of the brain causing unclear mental behaviors and aggression.
