Somatoform Disorders
Somatoform disorders and dissociative disorders are issues that look like medical problems but are actually psychosocially induced. Somatoform disorders are psychological issues being shown mostly as a physical problem. When asked to compare and contrast a few of the main Somatoform disorders I can strongly say that what I found in my studies was quite interesting. In a few short paragraphs below I will compare and contrast Somatization, Conversion, Hypochondriasis, Malingering and Factitious disorders. I will also describe how I would be able to tell by the information I learned if a patient suffered from one of these disorders. The first …show more content…
I actually found these two disorders to be the most interesting as they had so much in common. Both of these disorders are made up illnesses by the patients to in some way help themselves out, also both Malingering and Factitious disorders are considered to be psychological disorders. I did find a few differences such as in the Malingering disorder patients pretend to have an illness or disability in order to receive some sort of compensation or to avoid punishment. For example a solider would fake a disability so they would not have to go and fight at war, or a girl pretending to have a bad neck after a car accident so would be end up making compensation. While reading about the Factitious disorder I found these patients create extreme illnesses and some of the time give themselves medication, drugs to cause bleeding, and cause high fevers to themselves. These patients suffer from a psychological disorder and feel they have no control over their problem. Doctors that deal with both of these types of patients feel as though they waste a lot of their time. I believe in this type of situation I would never be able to tell the difference between the two disorders and would be unable to tell which the patient was suffering …show more content…
As for the differences I came across a few, first I found that as stated above the Malingering disorder are patients who make up diseases for money and just pretend to be a patient and Hypochondriasis is when the patient takes normal bodily symptoms and turns them into a serious thought out to be illness. The difference in these two are that Malingering patients have a motive to why they are supposedly ill and Hypochondriasis patients have psychological issues and obsess over normal symptoms. If I were to try and diagnose these two patients I would definitely be able to tell which disorder they were suffering from as I would determine if a patient was out for money or if they were really just concerned with their
