For example, if I was sad and a person with autism came up to me and started talking then they wouldn’t recognize that I was sad. They wouldn’t feel empathy for me or try to make me feel better because they cannot recognize what emotion I am displaying. They tend to have a lack of interest in activities or playing. Children won’t want to play with the other kids and they won’t want to engage in any activities. They show interests in pieces of objects, but not the whole object. For example, if toddler was looking at a Barbie Doll, then they would only focus on the feet of the Barbie and not the entire Barbie. Older children with autism may have a fascination with a certain topic, such as food, video games or magic. Another symptom of autism is that the child has to have the same routine for everything. They may need to have orange juice and pancakes for breakfast every morning and if they don’t get that they will get upset and cry or throw a tantrum. Another mental disorder that can be misdiagnosed is Asperger’s. Asperger’s diagnosis has changed from a category on its on to a part of a wider category called the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Asperger’s is a type of Autism, but it is a highly functioning Autism. Patients with Asperger’s have a higher level of thinking than others with Autism. Asperger’s has all of the symptoms of Autism and can be misdiagnosed. Since Asperger’s is autism with a higher level of thinking then a student who is gifted and exceptionally smart could be diagnosed as having Asperger’s. A student who is gifted and gets bored easily may be acting out in class and because they are acting out in class then their teacher may want their parents to take them to see a specialist. If the specialist doesn’t look into the symptoms enough, the child could be diagnosed as Asperger’s when in reality they are just exceptionally smart and get bored in class. No matter the case, any mental illness which shows signs of repetitive hand movements, a loss of language skills and a lack to engage in social interactions could be misdiagnosed as
