Song of Me
Have you ever been at a standstill in your life, unsure that what you’re doing in your life is what you really want to? Maybe the past has forced you to settle or made you give up on all hope for the future. Whenever I have thoughts like these, I always turn to music. Natasha Bedingfeild’s song, “Unwritten”, provides not only an uplifting feeling but substantial lyrics that can provide much meaning. This song is one of the most inspiring songs I have ever heard.
“I am unwritten
Can't read my mind, I'm undefined
I'm just beginning
The pen's in my hand, ending unplanned

Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words
That you could not find
Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inhibitions

Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten”

This song reminds me that we have our whole lives to live and that our future is whatever we make it. We, as humans, have the ability to choose and write in another future if we want. In life, our story can not predict what the future has in store for us. "The pens in my hand, ending unplanned" This lyrics mean that our life is in our hands, and we are the only one who can "write" the rest of our "story" (life).
Besides, this song is very inspirational. To me, this song teaches me about living and the moment and learning from my mistakes. It teaches me that I can't let things in the past hold me back, everyday is a new beginning. Also, it is okay if I don't know what it is I want to do with the rest of my life. Sometimes that is even better because it lets me have new experiences until I find something that is perfect because it is what I want for myself, not what anyone else does.
Moreover,

At first I thought that the music was not in tandem with these lyrics at all. The lyrics have such depression in them at first while the music itself is so peppy and upbeat. I could not understand how they worked together. That for me was the site of struggle. Hegemonic norms tell us that songs about death and sadness should be slow and heavy. This song has such energy to it and resists hegemonic norms so that it couldn’t possibly fall into the category of death. I listened to the song a few more times and I realized that the song was not just a sad retelling of a story, but it is a memorial of…

All though my parents never got a divorce I feel a connection with different pieces of the song and I thoroughly enjoyed the way he expressed his emotions throughout the song in words I would have never thought of using. The song is very vocal with a quite instrumental background that ties it all together, he uses so much emotion and power in his singing that it’s hard not to feel the same emotions he is feeling in this song. He talks about his parents fighting and him trying to keep them together which I feel like most children have tried to do when their parents are fighting.…

For my song I picked Garth Brooks “The River.” I consider this song to be very meaningful. This song is about chasing your dreams and never giving up on what you believe in, reminding us that life is shorter than we think and if we just stand on the shore watching the river go by, then life will be gone before we know it. Garth Brooks uses a lot of psychological concepts in this song, such as, Attitude, Affect, Motivation, Optimism, and Behavior. Garth Brooks says, “A dream is like a river.” A dream changes, just like a river changes. As life changes, the river can be calm then strong then calm again, so our path in life change. Garth Brooks says that “He will sail his vessel until the river runs dry.” To me this mean no matter what life throws…

Life is a very delicate and mysterious process. Walt Whitman’s poem Song of Myself exhibits how life should be celebrated and enjoyed accordingly. His optimistic and carefree view of life is easily distinguished through his words. Whitman expressed a love of life as well as his easygoing mood when he composed this poem. Moreover, his writings are referring to enjoying life, the similarities between all living things, and enjoying life until death is upon him.…
