Margaux is faced with many obstacles with her family who pays no mind to her. She is the drop dead gorgeous girl everyone wants to be with, although what everyone does not know is her secret. Her beauty hides the real story. She goes home to a very dysfunctional family at night. Her father hooked on the horse races to give any attention to his depressed wife. Along with that there is her sister, who is infatuated with her new fiancé. Then there is little ole Margaux who is left alone and goes back and forth in her head. Normally, its difficult to tell if a child/teen has depression because its normal for a kid to be moody or sad growing up ("Depression in Children and Teens"). Symptoms of depression can be, but are not limited to, persistent sadness, loneliness, loss of appetite, insomnia, irritability, and feeling worthless or guilty (NIMH). An example from the novel would be Margaux. It would be very difficult to tell if she is depressed or just your average teenage girl. As previously stated, Koertge says referring to Margaux, "She wants to be around people; she wants to be alone." (Koertge 1). That could be easily mistaken as just a teen being moody. Although, then further in the book Margaux constantly complains about not being noticed in her own house and questions if anyone would even notice if she disappeared.
