Source Analysis Skills
A research paper is a piece of work relying heavily on other information sources. It should state your argument or perspective using other authors' work or ideas to support your own. The compositions of a research paper is basing on your synthesizing and analyzing skills. A synthesis is a written discussion basing upon the minimum of two sources or more (Behrens, Rosen 71). An analysis, on the other hand, is an argument draws from a brief research on a certain topic (141). It is seemingly obvious that a research paper must consists of a topic. It is crucial that you have a well understanding of your sources' main ideas. Summarizing and critical reading skills are the basis of synthesis (70-71). Using the “Sources Evaluation Checklist,” you must first identified the purpose of the passage to enhance the credibility of your paper. After identified the purpose, you should look into the author's background and citations. It is also important to make sure that your sources are up to date. For example, this could significantly lower the credibility of my paper about gender inequality if my sources are from 19th century and have not been updated since. You should also determine the reliability and coverage of your sources. Do the authors of your sources do their research on the topic? Are there any citations to been seen? Lastly, what is included and excluded in the source content. Another crucial element in a research paper is the citations. You have to make sure you give credits to the other people's work and idea you are using to avoid plagiarism. You also have to make sure all your sources are correctly cited, whether it's the in-text citations or the work cited list. I have practiced citing many source exercises in class. It gave me the general idea of how to cite the sources. In addition, I also have a book to refer to if I'm unsure about certain
