Honey Boo Boo, Duck Dynasty, Moonshiners, Buckwild and plenty other shows are spreading the “gooder-then-grits” life of a redneck. Political, media, religious and a bunch of other public leaders in their political correctness, cannot bring themselves to utter the word "redneck." So…
As James Cobb noted those claiming to be “purists” of Southern identities and histories are actually worshipping something that was never pure in the first place. Cobb’s thesis in Away Down South suggested that culture is part of and connected to identity and culture is a process of change that required adaptability to ensure success. The history of the southern identity is not a story of continuity versus change, but continuity within it. Often used stereotypes, for Cobb, strengthen Southerners identites by remaining the same throughout eras of change. These well-worn stereotypes confirm the ability of the South to maintain consistent when the rest of the nation is changing around it. While some historians view the step away from the South as detrimental to the popular image of the South, most have been more concerned…
There are many people in today's society who in watch reality TV for various reasons. In the essay, "The Tribe Has Spoken", Rebecca Gardyn explains how age and gender can affect why people watch reality TV. She also focuses on whether or not reality TV will last. In her essay, there are many different statistics showing peoples perspective on reality TV. Gardyn draws upon different demographics that relate to her essay. Like others in the 18- to 24-year-old age group, I too enjoy watching reality TV. Although I like reality television, I am also interested in other genres as serial dramas because of the suspense.…

Stereotyping is seen everywhere from reality television to everyday life. Southerners are given terms that now categorizes them into southern stereotypes, such as: cracker, white trash, redneck and hillbilly. After getting burned on the back on the back of their necks from the sun from working outside all day, poor white southern farmers are given the stereotypical nickname “redneck.” Those in the South work only enough to get by with what is needed and no more. This example of a southern stereotype led to the construction of a new stereotype of southerners becoming known as being “lazy.”…
Many television shows portray the lives of typical American families; both African American and European American. I have chosen to compare and contrast two television shows: Family Matters and Home Improvement. The two shows are surprisingly similar in many aspects, but there are a few differences in the communication styles and other aspects of the two families. Communication theories can be used to help show and analyze the communication between each family. These theories include interactional, dialectics, speech community, and cultivation. Do prime time television shows really represent and portray the differences and stereotypes between African American and European American families?…
Reality television has become one of the most common forms of entertainment in the American household since the early 2000’s. From “The Bachelor” to “Jersey Shore”, no plot seems too racy or inappropriate for audiences of all ages. Recently, however, TLC aired their newest reality TV show, “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” that is thought to be one of the most controversial reality TV series of all time. The show encompasses the lives of a small-town, southern Georgian family who live a frugal lifestyle, and demonstrate the self proclaimed stereotype of rednecks. Fascinatingly, the series captures the quirky attitude of seven-year-old Alana Thompson, and her mother, June Shannon. Although the series has produced high ratings in its first season, (tying the ratings for the Democratic National Convention in the 18-49 demographic) critics cannot help but comment on the obscurity of this new reality TV show.…
While a redneck is both great to have around in a bar fight; as well as in a zombie apocalypse for their abrasive nature; they are also very deep rooted with American Pride. They believe in support of the country in which they live. Many of this country’s workforce consists of redneck workers. One may argue that this country was built on the sweat of a redneck’s red neck…
Published in 2015 this text is intended for educators of all kind but specifically intended for educators of social work. Friedman is a self-proclaimed “avid consumer of popular culture,” Friedman 2015 p.g 2 although referring to reality TV as his “dirty little secret,” Friedman 2015 p.g 2 Friedman believes it allows him to hone his ability to apply critical theory to popular culture and further deconstruct his social conditioning. Direct and simple sentence structure allows the author to get his point that Reality TV “provides a useful site of theoretical analysis” Friendman p.g 2 in a clear and concise manner. Word flow is easy to follow with a light tone to keep the reader engaged. The article flowed smoothly from narration to reason, diction is informal and in first person, “allowing me to consider the dominate discourses that shape my world” Friedman 2015 p.g 2 this gives a tone of casualness for an academic paper, but makes it easy for the reader to understand. Ultimately the outcome of the casual diction is in the authors favour as the reader comes to the same conclusion as the author. Although an academic piece the energy that is given though the authors words are about reality T.V are emotionally charging “entry.. into worlds I…

The rural south was now a high tech, innovative region that welcomed diversity from other regions of the United States. This diversity introduced change in southern culture and the rebirth of the entire region. From the creation of NASA, to the popular beaches and cities the south was booming.“They were not the plantation overseers of ignorant hillbillies of the past..” says Schulman. The people of the south were not their forefathers. They were finally laying to rest all the negative stereotypes associated with the region. Citizens of the south have taken their history and transformed it into something more positive. When speaking on the south in the past there were always negative associations, but with the rebirth of this region, people were taking those negative assumptions and using them to their advantage. Southerners have taken their past and made it into something positive. From the evolution of country fashion, to the formation of annual getaway destinations, the south has risen from its history. “Southerners no longer felt ashamed of their region..” (Schulman 114) The south was becoming a more innovative region. Southerners created fashion, music, and technology not seen in other regions. This innovation created a boom in regional pride and unity amongst its population. The south did a complete metamorphosis and changed for the better. “On the contrary, their culture… became increasingly popular in the very places where it had been most disdained.” (Schulman,…
