The pill bug (commonly referred as rollypollys) is a small, segmented land creature that can roll into a tiny ball for protection. Which is classified as a crustacean under the order of Isopoda (Isopoda). The organism is generally characterized by a pair of antennae, seven pairs of legs, and a segmented body (Isopoda - Slaters). Whenever it is disturbed it usually curls into a ball until there no longer a threat. The typical sowbugs or pillbugs live in moist environments outdoors. This is due to the presence of gills, isopods generally live in moist, wet areas and avoid lighted areas. In addition, their diet consist of leaf litter, fish flakes and other vegetation (Burnett). In addition, these organisms do not bite, sting, or transmit diseases, infest food, clothing or wood (Sowbugs and Pillbugs).…
These species are commonly known as pill bugs; they are terrestrial crustaceans that are oval shaped and a little flat. Pill bugs live in gardens, fields, forests or any region that is moist and are most likely found under rocks. The reason behind as to why isopods prefer a moist area is because they don’t have a good waterproofing cuticle wax, which causes them to dry out easily (“Critter Catalog," n.d., para. 8). Pill bugs are also known as “roly-polies” because of their ability to roll up into a ball.…
The American cockroach (Periplaneta Americana) or more commonly identified as the waterbug is the largest species of the common cockroach. It is considered to be a…
This lab was testing different methods to prevent bean beetles form infesting a chickpea harvest. They wanted to find something that would protect the crop from this invasive creature. To do this they created 3 replicate experiments which contained 25g of seeds each group with a different genotype, and 5 newly hatched adult C. maculatus were added to the jar. They continued to check this on a weekly basis, at the end of the experiment they found that the results where quite different for each jar, and that all of them were not immune to the bean beetle.…
Narwhals are protected, mostly by two very important laws. One is that narwhals are illegal to hunt unless they’re part of the Inuit tribe because narwhal is a part of the nutrients in their diet. The second law is that the tribe is limited to killing five narwhals per year. These laws help to dramatically lessen the amount of narwhals that are killed per year, but sometimes these laws are poorly reinforced. These rules are by the Narwhal Protection Regulations, which are part of the Canadian Fisheries Act. Some other parts of this are mothers and calves are at all times protected, no exceptions, full use made of narwhal carcasses, and the complete documentation and labeling of every tusk that comes into their possession.…
The sow bug, also called the pill bug, is an isopod that does not have a wide range of items that it likes to eat. In the experiment we were trying to see how the pill bug reacted with certain man made substances and two substances that they would find in their everyday habitat. We tested ketchup, orange juice, sand, baking soda, flour and water. The pill bugs did not like the ketchup and orange juice I believe because of the strong acidic smell and it didn’t like the baking soda because of the texture. The pill bugs didn’t have a problem with the water and sand because those two are found in the everyday life. The data that we found did not fully support our hypothesis. The pill bugs are very simple isopods that reacted well with the sand because that substance is found in their habitat.…
There are many women in Police forces today. It never use to be that way, policing was considered a man’s job. That changed in the early 1900’s when the first American born citizen was hired as a police woman. Alice Stebbins Wells was born in Manhattan Kansas on June 13, 1873. Mrs. Well’s was the first American born female to be hired as a police woman with arrest powers. Before being hired by the LAPD as the first women officer Alice was a social worker. It was in 1909 when she petitioned Mayor George Alexander and city council, requesting that an ordinance providing for Los Angeles police women be adopted. It was passed an on September 12, 1910 Alice Stebbins Well’s was appointed as the nation a first female to be designated a police women…
The Earth is home to various forms of life contributing to the endless biodiversity that we see in our daily lives. In environments around the world there are distinct correlations between the environment and adaptations acquired by the organisms that live there. It has been shown that these adaptations are a result of crossing-over events that occur during meiosis. This exchange of DNA sequences give rise to organisms that will survive successfully in certain environments (Cyr, R. 2002). This is seen clearly on the Slopes of Evolution Canyon…
Socrates once argued that in order to live a correct life, it is imperative that one knows oneself. In other words, to live a correct life, one must be authentic, or true to oneself. Catawba, as a whole, is enriched by the shared experiences and authentic investments of its student body as they further learn who they are and how to live according to who they are. Describe an incident (or a series of incidents) in which you felt you were living most authentically. How do you believe this situation (or series of situations) revealed the true you? Finally, looking forward into your future Catawba experience, how will you invest your true self in the campus community, and how will this allow you to further live authentically?…
Sofonisba Anguissola was an established painter of the late Renaissance, and was one of the most well-known female painters of the time. Born in 1532 in Cremona, Italy, her and her six siblings were raised with a noble upbringing. In 1546, she moved to the home of accomplished painter Bernardino Campi to train under his instruction. She stayed with him for three years, then was taken under the wing of Bernardino Gatti, who was another noted painter, for three more years. At one point in her training, Anguissola had been noticed so much that she acquired the help of Michelangelo. The famous sculptor sent Anguissola a sketch and had her copy it on her own, then Anguissola sent it back to Michelangelo for him to appraise it (Kuiper). At this time…
The purpose of the Sow bug lab was to determine if the Sow bugs had a preference of leaves to eat. A brief description of the procedure is that the leaves were put in a Petri dish full of sand and sow bugs. Then there were recordings of how much of each leaf the Sow bugs had eaten each day. Observations on what the Sow bugs had eaten, and how they were acting were recorded everyday. The Sow bugs preferred the Hickory leaf above all leaves involved in this experiment.…
According to Atlassian, JIRA is used for issue tracking and project management by over 25,000 customers in 122 countries around the globe, Jira Includes tools allowing migration from Competitor Buzgilla (mentioned Below). Compared to Bugzilla JIRA is more internally customisable. Bugzilla has a single, fixed, state machine to represent the lifecycle of a 'bug'. All such bugs are assumed to follow the same fixed pattern of detection, repair and test. All bugs must also have the same lifecycle. JIRA allows this state machine to be changed by its users, and also for different classes of issue to be tracked, each with their own state machine. This makes JIRA far more flexible: it may be used as a more general "issue tracker" rather than solely…
