By reading her letter to her brother in France, readers can assume that main reason she came was for religious purposes. In her letter, she said that she was certain “that his Divine Majesty wants our reestablishment” (Marie’s, pg. 45). She wrote that God was the cause of her migrating to the Americas. Marie seemed happy with the life God has chosen for her and she wass willing to do anything to please God even if she had to go to another country. Very confident that God is behind this migration, she said “This vexatious spirit has already caused two hospital sisters to return and having this example before my eyes arouses fear” (Marie’s, pg. 46). When the two hospital sisters went to France but came back, she thought it is because of God since he wanted them to come to the Americas for a purpose. Another reason for coming to the Americas was also because of the lack of access to resources and difficulties in France. Marie explained to her brother that getting the basic necessities of life and clothing were easier to obtain in the Americas.
