Norman Bowker is not a coward man. He is a man with dignity and and strong heart. I wanted to prove to his dad how strong he could be and that he is capable of anything.
Norman may seem to be like any other man. Even when he was folded in with the war, he was part of the waste, he would not give up or let it destroy him. He was a person who would put other first before himself.
The author also shows not cowardice when he writes, “ Kiowa was almost completely under… There were flares and mortar rounds, and the stink was everywhere--it was inside him, in his lung.” (O’Brien ). This quote shows Norman didn’t seem to want to save his friend according to the way he describe the moment and the smell. The event discussed him that put his friends life in danger and have his soul taken away forever.
Norman put his life on the line to, as the author decribed “He hoisted himself out of the deep mud, and then he lay still and tasted the shit in his mouth and closed his eyes and listened to the rain and explosions and bubbling sounds.(O’Brien, Pg. 143). This shows that
Norman tried to save his friends life.
Given these points, Norman Bowker is a brave man. He let himself save his friend and have that feeling of his friend dying then having the guilt of not trying to save his friend. The risk of death is worse the the fear of losing a friend.
