Another part of communication is the relevance of speech communities. Once again there is a classic example of this in the movie. One of the most…
Ann M. Johns, a well-known linguist has studied the way communities communicate with each other and the specific ways they do so. In “Discourse Communities and Communities of Practice: Membership, Conflict, and Diversity”, Johns defines communities of practice as something that “refers to genres and lexis, but especially to many practices and values that hold communities together or separate them from one another” (500). Communities of practice are groups of people who use distinct language, objectives, and ideas, that are different from other communities and their practices. To effectively analyze a community, one must fully understand the way that community functions and communicates with its members, while acknowledging the different types…
In “A Stranger in Strange Lands” McCarthy relates the classes Dave attended to a foreign country with a language that had to be learned in order to succeed. Dave struggled in his poetry class because he failed to learn the “foreign” language of the class. In this academic discourse, Dave had to learn to analyze and write essays that will, “make [him] say something quite specific about the meaning of a poem (your thesis) and demonstrate how far [he has] progressed in recognizing and dealing with the devices a poet uses to expresses his insights” (242). Because this was unlike what he had to do in his Freshmen Composition or Biology class, this approach was foreign to him. He was use to summarizing and proving his textual coherence but now he was more focused on new ways of thinking and writing for that class. His grades in the poetry class never improved. The social aspects as well as his coherence influenced his writing. Dave had a connection to the writing his both of his other classes but not to poetry. He thought that none of the poetry related except for the similar literary devices. He also felt that he was an outsider on the discipline while his instructor wasn’t. He would spend hours writing the essay to fulfill the required Manner and Quality just to have his errors pointed out without any explanation as to why they were wrong. Dave felt that, “In Poetry, more or less each poem is different, so it’s not taught to you. You just have to figure it out from that poem itself and hope Dr. Forson likes it” (251). This hindered Dave’s chance of succeeding in the class. Because he saw that his writing was failing he could’ve asked to meet with the professor privately to discuss what he was doing wrong. The professor also could’ve had more guideline lectures and helped the students by pointing out some details in the poem that would’ve benefited their writing.…
There are many ways to speak English, ‘Based on how much the English language is used around the world,’ (Barton, 1996:59). In addition, spoken language is dependent on which region in England a person is born and resides as this determines where their accent and dialect originates. Dialect can include new words or words that mean different things. For instance, Mark James uses dialect in the transcript entitled Byker when he states: ‘ Bairn’ instead of baby. Using the term ‘bairn is common dialect in Newcastle, however, people that do not understand the Newcastle dialect may not understand what Mark is saying in his spoken language. People also have different accents. Accents are words that have the same meaning, but have a variation in the pronunciation. One example is when Mark states: ‘Deaing’ for ‘doing’ in the Byker transcript. People tend to use their accent and dialect in their spoken language when talking to family and friends. This is often termed being in a sociolect. In addition, people also have their own idiolect. A person’s idiolect is a person’s own style of spoken language that can include their own use of grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary. In addition, idiolect can include language features, such as false starts and repetition. For example, Mark James states: ‘I met our lass in, I mean I fell, I mean …..’ This quote highlights how Mark has repeated what is spoken and has changed what he was going to say. However, Mark is being interviewed about his personal life and this may affect how confident he is feeling in this…
The On-Site property manager is accountable for property operations, overseeing and enhancing the value of the property. Community Managers must embrace the concepts of Level 5 Leadership, Group Responsibility and Servant Leadership. The purpose for a property manager is to well manage and coordinate persons, activates, and available resources in order to accomplish community objectives as set forth by the Regional Property Manager and property owner. They must report their District/Regional Manager. Has a property manager you have to supervise the entire on-site staff (Assistant Community Manager/ Bookkeeper, Leasing Coordinator, Leasing Consultant, Community Service Supervisor/Assistant Community Service Supervisor, Service Technician, Make-Ready Technician, Groundskeeper, Painter, and Housekeeper.) This job has other responsibilities such as: meeting financial goals, leasing housing, administrating the property, resident retention, keeping up with maintenance, and making sure safety is enforced. A person in this occupation must conduct all business in accordance with TMI polices and procedures. I took a journey through my mother’s occupation as an On-Site Property Manager. She has been in this field for almost 5 years. I guess that would make her and old timer in her job. In order to be in this field all she had to have was a high diploma and a lot of people skills. She has to attend a yearly training program. That's good because the learning never stops in the occupation. Any person going into this field has to know the meaning of HUD (Housing Urban Development) and RD (Rural Development). You also have to read the Louisiana Fair Housing policies and procedures. My mother says she chose this field because it allows her to put her business management classes to good use. She enjoys her job because it gives her a chance to display her leadership qualities and she loves being in charge of a large group of people. When asked,” What advice would she give a new comer…
Business is an occupation, profession, or trade; as so www.dictionary.com states. In a business environment one can expect a lot of reading and writing coming from the business itself when it comes to keeping track from income statements to all the investments in the company or business. Reading and writing is found in many discourse communities, it can be a group that shares the same goals or interests. There are many ways in which we can incorporate our reading, writing, research and critical thinking skills that apply to our daily routine. I’ve developed in my understanding of my identity and how it has been shaped because of reading, writing, research, and critical skills. To weather its learning from others experiences in literacy or just picking up skills from an article on research done online. There’s a difference between the reading and writing done in a discourse community such as a business opposed to a job at the business, both require different ethics in the literacy world.…
Oral and written communication within a discourse community goes beyond plain academic language, it rather involves a detailed understanding of how a community works which includes its values, goals, jargon, and protocols. As a college student, knowing these elements in a particular discourse community can considerably help to determine proper ways to move effectively across a discourse community, have a successful communication and better career development. I identify myself as a member of the Environmental Science community through my studies in the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences at the University of Arkansas, which is an Environmental science community by itself, but it is also part of a worldwide community…
with one another. Aside from the club events, the college student and the buddy are supposed to meet twice a month to develop a relationship with each other. Even though Best Buddies meet together as a group, they are not a discourse community.…
My discourse community that I chose is law. I chose this direction because law is something I’m passionate about. Whether it be defending the rights of an individual, or an entire business, this is something I see worth doing. Sometime this year, I met a friend that shared his passion for law with me. He chose law because of the fifth amendment, stating, “everyone has the right to not self-incriminate oneself.…
There are several types of discourse communities, which have different goals, values, language, issues, effects and communication style. The discourse community that I identify myself with is the boarding family discourse community. This community may only be made up of a few members, yet the impact they have in their neighborhood is quite significant. They may not be related or even have known each other for more than five years, yet the bond and connection they have is so strong.…
These limitations sorted out all of the negative aspects of speech community in the relation of conformity and standardisation. She made an excellent point because speech community was initially presumed to have unified standards built by central community members. Not everyone in the community allowed to speak out their thoughts and instead generalised by social a…
Soccer has been a huge part of my life since I was young. Ever since I can remember, I’ve joined the school soccer team when I was given the option. Of all the years I was involved in soccer, my high school freshman year was the most memorable. Due to my advanced skills, I was put in the senior soccer team, a feat quite difficult to accomplish for any incoming athlete. That year our school hired a highly experienced coach; he made our school team feel like a real discourse community. Unlike other coaches I’ve had before, his knowledge and wisdom of the game of soccer surpassed that of anyone I’ve met. From the very first day of try-outs, I felt like I was part of a professional soccer team. Running back and forth across the soccer field, my classmates and I were working hard to impress the new coach, as he was just hours away from picking his team players. Little did I know I was in for an experience of a lifetime.…
In today’s world, there are many different discourse communities that consist of how someone speaks at home versus how someone speaks at school. In Amy Tam’s essay, “Mother Tongue,” she explains her discourse communities and how they affect her life. I think it is safe to say that she is not the only one who deals with this. I myself find myself talking differently when I am with my family versus when I am at school and I know there are so many others who feel the same way. I believe that there are differences between these discourse communities. For example, how someone acts or speaks when he or she is with a particular community. Based on this, I think that students should be required to use academic discourse in a college writing environment for multiple reasons which include: writing properly, sounding more intelligent, getting the respect one deserves, being more educated with today’s modern English style, and increasing one’s vocabulary.…
Greg Critser lives in Pasadena, California, and writes regularly for USA Today and the Los Angeles Times on issues of nutrition, health, and medicine. An authority on the subject of food politics, Critser has been interviewed by PBS and other media, and his writing on obesity earned him a James Beard nomination for best feature writing in 1999. Embarrassed by a passing motorist who shouted "Watch it, fatso," Critser went on a diet and lost forty pounds. In the process he discovered that in America, weight is a class issue—fat and poor often go together. In exposing the heavy truths about American obesity, Critser gives our bloated nation a wake-up call. His books include Fat Land: How Americans Became the Fattest People in the World (2003) and Generation Rx: How Prescription Drugs Are Altering American Lives, Minds, and Bodies (2005).…
Did you know that there are four types of discourse communities? There's the professional community, which is your job, career or working environment. Your social communities are your friends and family. The civic community is the clubs, hobbies and extracurricular activities you attend to or participate in.…
