Stop texting while driving
Introduction: Today I am here to talk to you about a national epidemic, and one of our country 's top killers. My plan is to bring awareness to you about the dangers of texting while driving. I will provide you with startling statistics, a short video, helpful interventions, and a personal pledge to never text and drive again.
I. Statistics don 't lie. Texting while driving is a serious and growing threat to road safety.
A. 1,600,000 accidents per year
B. 330,000 injuries per year
C. 11 teen deaths a day
D. Texting makes you 23 more times more likely to crash
Transition: So what makes texting while driving so dangerous?
II. There are three main types of distractions: visual, manual, and cognitive.
A. Visual- eyes off of road
B. Manual- hands off wheel
C. Cognitive- mind off of driving
Transition: How big of a problem is this?
III. Recent studies show texting is equivalent to....
A. Drinking 4 beers and driving
B. 6 X more likely to cause accident than driving intoxicated
C. Driving blindfolded across football field at 55 mph for 5 seconds
D. 31% ages 18-64 report texting while driving in last 30 days

IV. Many states are banning texting while driving or using graduated licensing systems for teen drivers
A. 2009 prohibit federal employees from texting on government business or equipment
B. 2010 railroad workers
C. 2010 commercial vehicle drivers
D. First offense: California max $20.... Alaska max $10,000
Transition: Fines do not scare everyone, so what can we do on a personal level?
