The Student Fitness Center at SIUE has been my employer for the past four years. This is where I have developed skills in working with people of all ages and helping people with their physical health needs. With my experience, I believe I am well qualified for the position as a graduate assistant in the graduate school, where I will continue to grow and meet new people. I am very excited to start this journey in my life because I feel I can address issues and develop new ideas to address those issues. I know that one must also have empathy. My time at the fitness has taught me patience when working with children as a Rockwall instructor, or helping out with special events and interacting with international students. Diversity is tremendously needed that is lacking in the speech pathology field. There are many multi-cultural issues within multiple populations. As an African American, I would bring diversity and genuine passion toward helping others. My career goal as a speech pathologist is to work in a hospital setting. I believe working in a hospital will present unique opportunities, and experiences that will challenge me, again and again. I would enjoy working with newborns and to the elderly. It is exciting to know that I could be helping evaluate and treat speech and language issues, and aide with swallowing
