Sports Broadcasting Sports are seen as an outlet for society, serving as a healthy distraction from everything else that is going on in people’s everyday lives. Great bonds and memories are formed through sports. However, people take it for granted. Sports represent a well-oiled machine, but behind that machine are many components that keep it going. One of these components is known as Sports Broadcasting. This is known to be the way through which people that do not attend the game get their sports, whether through radio, television, or other types of media. Sports Broadcasting is a huge part of the process in which sports are brought to everyone. Over the years Sports Broadcasting has evolved and has really changed the way people look at sports. It has produced memorable moments and influential people. With it sports were forever changed. It is hard to believe that the first broadcasts of sporting events occurred in the early 1920’s on the radio. Sports such as Boxing, Football, and Baseball were among the first that aired. It was not until the year of 1939 that the first ever television sports broadcast took place. It was at a collegiate baseball game between Columbia and Princeton, both of which are Ivy League Schools. At that game there was only a single camera that was positioned down the third base line. It was not until 1947 that sports shown on television really took off. The United States had just won World War Two and the nation was in need of some distractions. During that year the World Series, Boxing, and the Army vs. Navy football game were all broadcasted, causing the popularity of televisions to skyrocket. It is said that in 1948 there were about 190,00 television sets, but just two years later in 1950 that number had shot up to a massive 10.5 million sets. All of a sudden these televisions were providing a big economic impact for their shows (Browning).
