First of all, Men and Women enjoyed playing many sports as entertainment. Some of these activities were drinking, gambling, and billiards but mostly were mainly enjoyed by men. They also loved to play outdoor games such as tennis, shooting, cricket, and fishing. Some more games men indulged in were cockfight and rat pits. A lot of men who played card games like poker played so much that they lost their wages. Even women played sports, however they were limited to very few sports like skating and croquet. Children followed men and women by playing games and sports. Boys mostly played marbles, jacks, mumbly-peg, checkers, and backgammon. The main entertainment for girls were playing with dolls, knitting, and creating scrapbooks. Children who lived in cities could only play after the household work was done (Victorian Era Entertainment).
Next, being a woman in the Victorian Era could be very challenging. Women had many struggles they had to power through. Highly educated women wanted to have a career as a doctor but it was hard for them because it was a job for mostly men in those times (Swisher 92). There was also a dress code enforced on females however, it was soon to be abolished after women began playing sports (Anderson 57). Many women were employed and had jobs like nursing,
