Gay marriage is definitely the talk of the country, there are many people for it but unfortunately, the country also consists of people against it. My opponent Peter S. Sprigg is very much so against the whole idea of legalizing gay marriage. While reading the article Sprigg wrote, I noticed that his main concern was the uprising of children. He went on and on about the fact that marriage should be held between a man and a woman because opposite-sex relationships are the only type capable of producing children through natural intercourse. Yes, he is right it takes a man and woman to make a child, but that does not mean a gay couple doesn’t …show more content…
have the ability to raise a child.
While reading his article I did feel he made a good point but I still don’t agree. I found one part in particular to be complete nonsense. In the fourth paragraph Sprigg went on to say, “Social science has shown that children raised by their own biological mother and father, committed to one another in a lifelong marriage, are happier, healthier, and more prosperous than children in any other households.” (Gay Marriage). The reason I found that part to be senseless was because his article was supposed to be on gay marriage and reasons he didn’t agree with gay marriage. But Peter stating what he stated made me feel as if he went a bit off topic because yes, that can be true, children raised by their own biological mom and dad can be happy, but according to Gini, “In today’s world much has changed. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the divorce rate of first marriage is around 50 percent; second marriages are at 60 to 67 percent and third marriages are at 73 to 74 percent.” With that being said, I believe Peter stating what he said was a complete waste of time because in today’s world marriages barely last gay or straight.
“Does society need children? Do children need a mom and a dad? The answer to both questions is Yes. Legalization of same-sex marriage would amount to a declaration that the answer to both is No. This would be a foolish and tragic choice." (Gay Marriage). There are many gay couples in the US that are raising children that are turning out fine. Yes society needs children, and there are many ways gay couples are able to have biological children. Therefore, being a homosexual couple does not mean that they are incapable of conceiving biological children. Even if the child isn’t their biological child, there are definitely other ways to raise children which include adoption. There are so many kids out there with young parents, who are not ready to be parents.
"A 1995 National Health and Social Life Survey by E.O. Lauman found that up to nine million children in America have gay or lesbian parents. There were an estimated 300,000 to 500,000 gay and lesbian biological parents in 1976. In 1990, an estimated 6 to 14 million children have gay or lesbian parents. Latest statistics from the U.S. Census 2000, the National Survey of Family Growth (2002), and the Adoption and Foster Care Analysis and Reporting System (2004) include: An estimated two million GLB people are interested in adopting. An estimated 65,500 adopted children are living with a lesbian or gay parent. More than 16,000 adopted children are living with lesbian and gay parents in California, the highest number among the states. Gay and lesbian parents are raising four percent of all adopted children in the United States. Adopted children with same-sex parents are younger and more likely to be foreign born.” (Craft).
Another opponent against gay marriage is Mike Huckabee, former Governor of Arkansas. During a Dec. 9, 2008 interview on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart he stated, "Marriage still means one man, one woman, life relationship. I think people have a right to live any way they want to, but even anatomically, let 's face it, the only way that we can create the next generation is through a male-female relationship. (Gay Marriage). Again yes, you do need a male and a female to produce a child but you do not need a man and woman to raise a child. I’m really tired of ignorant people being so closed and one minded. Many people are stuck in the mindset that homosexual individuals aren’t like everyone else. Yes they are attracted to the same sex, but other than that they are pretty much the same as anyone else in the world.
The reason I feel so strongly about the legalization of gay marriage is because I believe everyone should have the same equal rights, as in marriage benefits. “Proponents argue that same-sex couples should have access to the same marriage benefits and public acknowledgment enjoyed by heterosexual couples and that prohibiting gay marriage is unconstitutional discrimination.” (ProCon). I strongly believe that’s true, I do not believe homosexuals should be discriminated because of their sexual orientation. According to ProCon, “On May 17, 2004, the first legal gay marriage in the US was performed in Cambridge, MA between Tanya McCloskey, a massage therapist, and Marcia Kadishm, an employment manager at an engineering firm. Before 2004, four states had banned gay marriages. In 2004, 13 states saw their constitutions amended by referenda to ban gay marriage. Between 2005 and Sep. 15, 2010, 14 more states followed suit, bringing the total number of states with constitutional bans on gay marriage to 30.”
No one has the right to deny anyone of any rights another group has. Denying the rights of homosexuals to marry is basically like slavery. In the past when slavery was accepted, African Americans were denied so many different rights that white people had in the world, which was completely unjust as human beings. I believe no one should have different treatment because of race, disability, or sexual orientation.
“Imagine for a moment that the Government had decided to legalize slavery but assured us that "no one will be forced to keep a slave". Would such worthless assurances calm our fury? Would they justify dismantling a fundamental human right? Or would they simply amount to weasel words masking a great wrong?” (Eaton)
I strongly believe that discrimination is absolutely wrong, and George Eaton definitely made a great point when he said, “Imagine for a moment that the Government had decided to legalize slavery but assured us that ‘no one will be forced to keep a slave.’” That really sparked my mind even more, I’ve definitely thought outside of the box when it came to gay marriage but seeing this ensured that I was on the right path toward equality. “The idea of introducing the notion of something as grotesque as slavery, and I use the word there advisedly, the ultimate denial of a person 's human rights, in this context will itself prompt many people to think that this is grotesque, that your notion of it is grotesque.” (Eaton).
Denying the right of homosexuals to marry also goes hand and hand with women’s rights. For years women have been fighting to reach equality with men. Till this day many women still don’t get treated as equals with men. “Before the current battle over the evolution of marriage, a different war for marital and personal freedoms was fought in this country, by and for women who were hoping to find something more than just marriage, as well as more rights within that union.” (Schake). Women and homosexuals have definitely had a very unfair life filled with discrimination and inequality. “Up until very recently, then, women and gays have been, if not in the same boat, then at least sailing in the same direction. “ (Schake). I strongly agree with that, I believe between women, minorities and homosexual’s life has definitely been a great challenge. Not being able to have the same rights as another group is extremely unjust and highly objectionable.
According to Kristina Schake, “In the distant past both groups suffered from the sort of discrimination that today we find abhorrent; women not only couldn 't vote, they couldn 't own property, divorce an abusive husband, or act as a witness in a court of law. Up until the 1860s, sodomy in Britain was punishable, and through the 1830s actually punished, by death.”
I truly wish this world didn’t consist of so much discernment. I don’t see how giving the right of marriage to homosexuals has any concern with heterosexuals. Is a gay man marrying another man really interfering with anyone’s life besides their own? No, I do not believe so. If two gay people got married tomorrow I wouldn’t even know, therefore how is it anyone’s business but their own?
Another factor I feel certainly sparked the hatred toward homosexuals had to be the church.
Many churches preached against gay rights, saying things like, “Homosexuals are sinners, god didn’t want this, and my favorite, god made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve.” “Leviticus 20:13 - If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood [shall be] upon them.” (Bible). When people read things like this in the bible it’s basically telling them it’s okay to discriminate against others, such as homosexuals. It is so wrong that the bible consists of sch horrible, degrading passages, saying if a man is in sexual relations with another man they should be put to death. The bible also states, “Leviticus 18:22 - Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it [is] abomination.” Don’t get me wrong I see no problem believing in god, but I don’t believe people should take the bible as serious as they do. The bible doesn’t only talk about discrimination against homosexuality, it also talks about how women must listen to their husbands, and different foods you shouldn’t eat because if you don’t obey the bible you are going to hell. Leviticus 19:27 reads, “You shall not round off the side-growth of your heads nor harm the edges of your beard.” That’s basically saying you can’t cut your hair or you’re going to hell, which is complete stupidity. The bible also states, “You are to keep my statutes. You shall not breed together two kinds of your cattle; you shall not sow your field with two kinds of seed, nor wear a garment upon you of two kinds of material mixed together.” The bible just has ridiculous “laws” that you must abide by like not mixing two fabrics, therefore saying you can’t wear polyester. I think it’s foolish that many people know the bible has irrational passages written in it, but insist on saying, “According to the bible homosexuality is
wrong.”
After all the trouble with trying to legalize gay marriage over the years, at least it’s somewhat progressing in a positive way. “On May 9, 2012, President Obama became the first sitting US president to declare his support for gay marriage stating, ‘At a certain point I 've just concluded that, for me personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married.’” (ProCon). Obama certainly has been making a difference in the United States of America. Many people should look up to him and admire him for what he has been doing for our country.
“On July 19, 2011, the Obama administration announced that it would support a bill by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). This followed President Obama 's decision on Feb. 23, 2011 to instruct the Justice Department to stop defending DOMA, the federal law that defines marriage as a legal union between a man and woman, over concerns that it violates the equal protection component of the Fifth Amendment.” (ProsCons).Obama isn’t the only Politian supporting gay rights, as of March 18th, 2013 Hillary Clinton has too agreed to accept gay marriage. “Former secretary of state Hillary Rodham Clinton’s announcement — via video — this morning that she is personally and publicly supportive of allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry.” ( HYPERLINK "http://www.washingtonpost.com/2011/02/24/AB7OmvI_page.html" \o "Visit Chris Cillizza’s website" Cillizza). Whether Clinton felt it necessary to let the world know that she is supportive of gay marriage because she will soon be running for President once again, and she feels like it will help her out a bit more in the race, doesn’t matter. At least individuals are coming to realize more and more people are openly accepting of homosexual marriage. “Democrats and Independents have moved strongly in favor of gay marriage in the last four years, and many of the people who may well challenge Clinton if she runs for president in 2016 have already staked out positions well to her ideological left on gay marriage — before today, that is.” (Cillizza).Gay marriage should be legal in every state, because everyone should have equal rights. I did thoroughly examine the articles in which Peter S. Sprigg and Mike Huckabee both featured in, and I did try to understand both of their points, but I still feel they are wrong. I don’t care how strongly someone feels about being against gay marriage; it does not justify the fact that homosexual individuals are human, like everyone else. They are men and women just like everyone else, and no one should be treated differently and denied the right of marriage. If two people love each other and want a piece of paper to show that they are bound to one another, than who are you to take that away from them?
Reflection
Dear Reader,
I found this paper to be relatively simple to write. At first it seemed pretty complicated, but once you’re in front of the computer, and you pick your topic carefully you should have no problems. I’m pretty familiar with the topic of Gay Marriage, therefore writing this came pretty natural to me. I felt this paper definitely let my mind wander, and write about absolutely anything my curiosity lead me too.
For me I found it easier to look for articles to cite as I wrote. I chose to do it that way because once you have started writing, ideas flow smoother throughout your mind. Therefore, making it easier to Google different aspects of the topic you are writing about. For example, while I was writing I randomly thought about comparing discrimination of gay marriage to slavery. Shortly after finishing the paragraph I was working on, I looked on the internet for articles comparing the discrimination of gay marriage to slavery. I don’t think if I was given this assignment last year, I would have felt so confident with my essay.
I think my writing skills have improved from the beginning of the semester till now. I feel as if my mind opened up more, when writing papers. For example, I’m putting a lot more descriptions and imagery into the papers I have been writing lately. I do greatly appreciate the instructor I have for CWP, because if it wasn’t for her I probably wouldn’t be writing so thoroughly, and descriptive. I was a pretty strong writer before college, but my skills have definitely improved.
Sincerely,
The Writer
